Dyno Runs at Altered Atmosphere 12-15-04

Did two runs on the awd dynojet dyno at Altered Atmosphere in Gaithersburg, MD.

My engine mods as listed in my sig are: STI panel filter, removal of my exhaust resonator and modification of my intake resonator (4.11 gears help bring 16% more torque to the wheels, but the dyno cancels out their benefit).

Temp was 38* outside and probably around 45* in the area where my car was dyno'd. Ran on 93 pump gas from Shell and both my alternator/PS and A/C belts were hooked up. Results are shown below:

(Peak values)
Ist run: 164.5 hp & 172.1 ft-lbs
2nd run: 165.1hp & 173.4 ft-lbs

Graph of my second run is shown below:

Based on a 30% loss in the drivetrain, this puts my flywheel power at around 236hp. All of this gain cannot be attributed to the high flow panel filter, but my numbers definitely show that removing the stock exhaust resonator doesn't harm top-end power or torque...

I'll finish up with a pic of my car on the rollers...

Chike,

Do you have baseline runs before you did any modifications? If not, these runs don't really tell if your mods did anything. I'm not trying to say that they didn't, nor am I trying to discourage, just that you are assuming drivetrain loss and do not really know what the power at the crank is.

BTW: How did Bill do?

Collin,

Based on other people who have dyno'd their SVXs in the past, a 30% drivetrain loss is a fair estimate, as our cars are both awd and have an auto trans.

I have no baseline runs, as these runs were supposed to be my baseline (only real power mod is the STI panel filter).

SVXRide will post his results at a later date.

Hey Porter...

any idea how close my results on the dynojet are to a stock '02/'03 WRX w/ 4EAT running on a similar machine?

If your wife's WRX 4eat is stock, we'll be pretty close in a race...

The 4.11 gears and 3430lb weight (w/o driver) of my SVX will keep me in the running.

The only magazine to have tested a 4EAT WRX was Road & Track back in '02. They got 15.2 @ 92mph. I was practically at that time last time last season and I'll be adding a few more 'goodies' over the Winter...

And the 3.3 should have the jump off the line due to the better bottom end torque...

Nice clean runs Chike. Good point about the removal of the exhaust resonator not having any effect on torque/HP. BTW, you might want to mention that you had disconnected the battery just before the runs.

Very good point Mychailo...

As Bill was helping me install a -ve grounding wire, on a grounding kit, I had to disconnect my battery for about 20 minutes before my run. This seems to have hurt my results slightly as the ECU on my first run had an afr of 14.1 when I hit my peak 164.5hp. On the second run, my ECU richened the afr to 13.6 and my max power increased to 165.1 (tq also increased by 1 ft-lb).

When Bill made his dyno runs during the summer, his stock ECU richened the afr to 13.4 when he made max hp. If I had done a 3rd or 4th dyno run and my ECU had richened my afr to 13.4, my peak power may have increased by another 0.5-1hp or so...

Very true Huck. There would be no turbo lag on an N/A engine...

My 1/4 mile runs and now dyno results prove that a properly modded SVX can be every bit as fast as newer, high performance Subarus on the market (with an auto trans).

We'll see how things go Tom. I plan on replacing my driver's side front axle and re-sealing my oil pump/front crankshaft seal first and then going from there...

I went through some documents I saved on my computer and Longassname's '94 LSi w/ a K&N and exhaust system dyno'd at 164.78hp before adding his chip...

Seems like my 165.1hp at the wheels can be a combination of 2-3 hp from my STI filter and 'production tolerances' giving me an SVX with a strong engine.

-Chike

P.S. I'm not too sure about Atco right now. I'm trying to talk my wife into going to Reading in April. If that works out, and there's drag racing on Sunday, we can have at it there!
