Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

I sent you a private message a couple months ago, but no reply. Unless you did reply and I happened to delete it without reading it.

Anyway, you've done great work with the SVX. Seems like you found a pretty decent (mechanically) 97. Keep up the hard work and keep the pictures coming!

What's you location in Iowa?

I'm in Yankton, SD

they are not sealed.
wipe all you can with an old t-shirt
spray brake cleaner (use the little red straw to get tom force)
blow out carefully with air,
repeat the other side with spray
wipe
blow.
repeat, do not spin the rollers without the lube
repeat one third final time
repack with good grease.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

worked on tonight, progress is being made.
Started after work at 3:45, worked til 5:30, breaked for supper, then from 6:30 until 9pm

Actually, about 2 hours was straightening a bent inner right tie rod.

Okay, for the bearing progress. Got the lateral bolt removed, emergency break cable and emerg. brake shoes, springs, holder removed. Shock bolt out, trailing arm bolt out, axle nut off…..abs sensor out of the housing.

Pressed the hub off the housing, removed the tone ring so I could pull the half bearing off the hub. snap ring removed on outer bearing on housing.

that is where it sits now, quit at 9pm, it is 32 degrees outside, the space heater couldn't keep up.

The outer part of the bearing and holder, the bearing itself turned good, but you can see some heat scorching on the rollers…….grease didn't look all that bad, well, if you call it grease, that may have been the issue…..
-tomorrow, after work I can start on it at about 3:15.
Going to press the inner part of the bearing and outer race out of the hub.
Clean up everything good.
Spray left side of the car with penatrant to prepare for same process

Will press new bearing into housing. install snap ring. Install both seals.
fasten tone ring back to hub. Press hub into the new bearing /housing
install onto car.

Then can do this to the left rear.

Then I still have to check front toe, and adjust steering back to 12 oclock center when driving straight..

Then………ps, I don't plan to do this again for some time. I will be reusing the old axle nuts. The torque spec range says 123-152 ft pounds. since I am reusing the axle nut, would you say 135 is about perfect? Or is higher more better?

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

Its 11PM just got home from my dads shop.
Both right and left new rear bearings and seals installed, everything back together.

Quiet 8 mile drive back home, no howling/roaring.
Worked on it from 3:45 pm-5:30, and then from 6:15-10:45

Whew, am beat, had to work this AM and early afternoon too.

Yay.
Hope that will last a long long time.
Also greased all the rear brake parts, sliders.
Used Anti-Sieze when assembly on everything.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

50 miles roundtrip to and from work today. First time on the interstate in this SVX
40 miles interstate, 10 miles paved side road
Filled the tank on the way home.
Put a new air filter in after got home.
Will log mileage from this point onward, hope i can report back something decent next week after the 300 miles to work and back in 6 days.

Ordered some HIR2 bulbs for the low beams, just some Phillips 9012LL's off ebay……and found a nicer used steering wheel (stock) on ebay, so will be taking care of that little quality issue too.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

removed the tired looking steering wheel, and installed a nice one I got off ebay.

Replaced the "D" drive light in the cluster.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

lots of rainy drizzly fog this time of year.
Did a Sunday afternoon drive to Waterloo and back, about 125 miles.
it was drizzly and some fog the whole while, glad I had put new wipers on it a month back before I started driving it.
It rained all the way to work 25 miles, and all the way back too.

Today, I put the HIR2 low beams in.

Its raining tonight too, and more tomorrow.

Then tonight, I decided to order the HIR1 high beams.
Then, I decided to order a couple sheets of lamin-x yellow, going to overlay the fogs to help with this foggy crud.

Will post up some more

Burned thru the first total tank of gas, and my avg was 21.8mpg Not near as good as my former 92 which avg about 26.5, but with this there has been 5 minute warm ups before going to work, and some few short jonts around to test things out etc…everything is good on power, but I may have to check into a couple knock sensors, its about due at 66.6k now

Cleaned up the greasy dirty grudge on the driver side door panel alcantara. I ended up finding a solution of my Simple Green Aircraft cleaner, and a terry towel, sprayed on, rubbed off, repeated, pretty much is the Best way to do the cleaning. I did other methods on my other SVX in the past, but for sure, this simple green aircraft stuff is the WAY to go, and it is clear and odorless, not like the green simple green stuff…..It made that Alcantara come to life which i thought it was dead and would be looking for a new panel. No need now. Also used it to clean off the grudgy looking wiper and headlights stalks. much improved.

I think that the next time the road department is about to put salt and sand down, this will go back away stored and will drag out the Outback and abuse it in the elements.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

got gas again today. 153 miles, used 6.9 gallons, so 22.1mpg this time
While getting gas, the kid in the BMW next to my pump made the comment "that is badass, where did you come up with that"

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

well then

Hopefully the BAD winter weather is done.

I just sold my winter driver the 04 Outback.

Now I am down to this and my BRAT.
The BRAT has been sitting for SOME time….and has a leaky tire (although I have several other sets to choose just to lazy to go about it)
also, the BRAT back is full of 2 years of beer bottles and cans I need to take in for refund deposit…..

So, DD the SVX from this point.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

That brought a chuckle to my belly. Great post, I understand lazy. Get that BRAT back in shape. Maybe the load in the back is part of the tire problem.
Can't think of a better daily driver than your low mileage '97.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

the other day I was deciding whether to get wheels for snows for this thing.
I was trying to decide on Sti or RX7, (my thought is a winter wheel gets dirty, and its easier to clean a simple spoke than a multi spoke) and I came across these and bought still haven't picked them up yet though These will clean up easier than the Sti variety.

I suppose I will sand down the center caps, and put some sort of Subaru sticker on the centers….does anyone have SVX stickers for center caps made up?

now my hunt for Michelin X-ice or Nokians is on, new or used if the right deal comes up

Also, today I got rid of the bottles and cans in the back of my BRAT: $19 bucks and some change worth….

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

my last fuel fill-up was 23.6mpg

-but I am having classic fuel guage that shows nearing empty and can only put 12.5 gallons of fuel in…..my first SVX was a accurate guage, this one must have the senders messed up…going to add that to my list of spring things to do list. this car came from Miami auction, maybe i will find bags in the tank lol.

still hunting for some Snow tires for the above wheels which i will be picking up in 2 weeks.

oh, update that i added the following:
