Harry (newsvx) Newman is going to Germany on business the first week in October. I am going to give him the part numbers for the German glass headlights and see what he can find out.

At low speeds, say 10kph as you move off from the lights, it will give a thunk as it shifts to the next gear. Similarly, when slowing to a stop, it gives the occassional 'thunk' but it is most noticable when reverse is engaged "Pause...pause *diffs and driveshafts sprint towards each other*.....THUNK" - accompanied by a torrent of foul language and nail biting and comparisons to lemons!!

However, I tried engaging reverse in my brothers auto Toyota Corolla (9 months old, 18,000km) and it sounded like the gearbox was going to destroy itself!!

My Camry will make a little noise when engaging reverse but, in my opinion, is much smoother shifting!! 1993, 186,000km....hell driven out of it!!!

Oh, we do have glass headlights. No fogs in them though!!

Here is a pic of what the glass lights look like. It is my understanding that the fog light location is occupied by an amber light that makes the entire housing glow amber when the parking lights are on. Is this correct, James?

jamsvx,

Last year I bought Norton parts from both NZ and Australia because the exchange rate was so favorable. I expect doing business with Australia is easier for us (in the US) than Germany - at least we come close to speaking the same language.

Not sure how much effort I'm asking for here, but can you find and post a price for the glass lenses?

From memory, there is nothing there at all - I will take some photos on the roll that I have and scan them in when developed - including pics of my SVX...hmm..MY SVX...that sounds nice...*walks around chanting "my svx, that SVX is mine, I own an SVX" *

"Not sure how much effort I'm asking for here, but can you find and post a price for the glass lenses?"

Not a problem at all - I had already rang up when I saw this thread and am awaiting a call back.

Mine has the little perspex lens protectors - so as to prevent stones from hitting the glass and causing much wailing and nashing of teeth...but no longer available here in Oz.

James

I don't want to break anyone's heart... but. Logic and instinct tell me that there would be specific design features built into the glass and the units themselves for driving on the "south" side of the road that would be a problem here.

Yeah, Boone; I agree - the word "focus" comes to mind.

Glass lights?

James, I know you are already pricing the lights for this thread. As Beav noted, the Oz lamps should in theory throw the dip beam to the left, whereas the US would need it diverted right. So the German type would be more suitable.

James, you say you have no fog lights. Is the glass in front of that area clear glass, or fluted for diffusion when used as a fog lamp?

That hard clunk you mention in the tranny. SVX changes are slurred and almost imperceptible, which in itself causes a lot of heat. That shock feature is caused by a failed solenoid in the valve chest. Not being an engineer I am not quite certain on it, but I think it is the line pressure one.

The good news is this should not be difficult or expensive to fix, assuming that IS your problem. The valve chest can be extracted by just dropping the pan, fit a new valve, stick it back up. Do the diagnostic, it may come up with the code.

Actually, the guts are all identical except for the fog light. If you heat up and remove the lens, you will see that the low, high, and fog or marker light (if equipped) are individually adjustable for the various contries.

You could easily take a RHD spec set of lights and tune them to match the US Specs. There should be no difference in lens design since the projector shines through a clear area of the lens.

The other benifit of the German lights is they have built in electric motor levelers that are controlled from the center console. If Aussie lights have the motorized levelers, that would be the cat's meow.

There isn't a problem taking apart the glass headlights and installing a fog light from US lights. The mounts are there on the housing for them, two pillips screws, remove the plug and you are home free.

I took a very close look at the UK-spec light assemblies when I was in England. They do not have anything in the fog light area; just a blank plate behind the lens.

Their parking lights (5w) are built into the bottom of the high beam assemblies so that the whole unit has a soft glow when they are on (which is when the car is not running---hence the name)

The only lights that are illuminated when the vehicle is in motion are the headlights and the turn signals (no parking/running lights in these assemblies)
