Removing front diff (putting it in rear)
I am about to buy a 1992 SVX LSi. This will be my second svx. My first one all I ever did to it was brakes. This one needs a new rear ring and pinion. (Thats what the owner tells me). I called my local subie dealer the part is 1500$. Thats crazy expensive BUT its the WHOLE diff setup. I really want to get this car but I need to be able to fix it. Anyone know where I can get a ring and pinion set up?
Also can I just put the front diff in the rear? I know it will be a pain to do but rear wheel drive svx SICK. Are they even close to the same thing? Thanks Jared |

Short answer... No
Are you sure it needs a rear differential?? Rear diff failures are pretty uncommon but front diff failures are... Double check Tom |

Well the current owner says he stopped hard at a stop sign and heard a clunking when taking off. He thinks its the rear diff definitly not the tranny he said since it shifts fine. Any clue? He thinks it broke a few teeth on the rear ring.

sounds like the front diff more than the rear... but I could be wrong. Without further investigation its all just guesses anyway

There's more to the SVX's tranny than shifting. The transfer drum could have gone. A while back someone was looking for pictures of blown rear diffs and couldn't find anything. If it were to fail it wouldn't be during normal driving, or during braking. It would be in a hard launch.

Go to a garage and get the car into the air. Put it in drive and see if all 4 wheels spin and if there's a horrific noise coming from one diff or the other.

Could also be bad ujoints on the driveline and/or a worn out dampner bushing thats on top of the rear diff. Need to get it in the air and look underneath,

Also it could be something as simple as a blown axle.

I didn't state what he said was wrong very well sorry guys
he says it drives but clunks alittle meaning what I thought a few teeth missing on the rear ring and pinion (he says its rear end). I will being some jack stands and a buddy to look the car over with me. How can I tell theres a tranny problem if it shifts fine? |

is that done the same way as checking for engine codes? Like putting the wire into that harness and such.

Nah, you do it by screwing with the shift column. The procedure is right on the SVX Information Warehouse.

Well I am guessing it is tranny related now since he said it goes into gear but the car won't move at all so? Transfer case? Tranny? How much would that cost?
