thanks for the responds. i gain more knowledge.
of course i don't want to ruin the $400-$500 expensive tires that i put on. there's the reason why the expensive equipments at the tire stores can do a good job......

hey, i figured that if we have 10 vehicles like earl or someone and if each vehicle needs to do balancing once every one or two month. if there's an ok alternative way, it's not a bad idea.... or if buy a high-tech spin balancer like around two thousands...if charge pple doing each for 5bucks, after doing 400 wheels the equipment will be free and can do it anytime you like at home...

I always triple check the balance once I attach the weights. Tires wear out fine but that's more due to the alignment. (I don't do alignments myself ) I've only had to change tires once from Canadian Tire Pacemarks (Bad) to Yoko AVS db s2's (Better).
I'll take a pic of the bubble balancer this weekend.

Like Harvey stated, the wider the tire/wheel combo, the less effective static balancing becomes. Mental exercise: place a stick on another, forming a 'T'. Add a weight to each end of the 'T'. When the stick with the weight is spun everything is good. Move one weight above the end of the stick and the other below. Now spin the stick and watch how centrifugal force pulls each weight to the outside, causing the stick to wobble. That's dynamic imbalance and there is absolutely no way to balance that with a bubble balancer or a nail in the wall. Unless you have some very cheap (not necessarily inexpensive) tires, or are accident/puncture prone, they shouldn't require re-balancing more than once or twice in their lifetime. Ditto with alignments, worn parts, physically bending parts from potholes, accidents, etc. or sagging springs (which usually takes more time than the average set of tires will last) are about the only reasons for the alignment to change. Or the last tech to do it left an adjustment loose...

Yeh, good example Beav, I couldn't think of an easy way to demonstrate it. That does it well.
Harvey.

for me spending $20 for an alignment is far better from having the pain to do it myself...

35 years ago we got $14.95 for a front alignment. These days a four wheel alignment will set you back $50-$75. Still a bargain considering the price of tires, gas and being able to hold your beer with one hand and the cell phone with the other with the car going straight down the expressway during rush hour.
