I sealed off the air box from the engine since then, and I imagine the other little things I've done should put me at 15.4s in ideal conditions. The real difference is going to be made when I fix the exhaust up right and get awd back online. I'm anticipating 6.5 0-60 unless I'm not actually losing power through drag on the rear wheels and driveline right now. I'm pretty sure I am.

That old 8-6-4 engine, which was the original DOD, wasn't a bad design mechanically. It was just that the electronics weren't sophisticated enough back then to make it smooth. It was very obvious when the engine went to 4 or 6 cylinders, because the exhaust note was very different, and there was jerkiness in the transition. In addition, I believe they had severe NVH issues especially with the 6 cylinder mode. That's why the current DOD only switches between 4 and 8 cylinders.
I'll have to read the article on this in one of my mags, but the old system didn't seem that bad to a modder. I can understand why a regular consumer wouldn't be happy with it, though. If this can be done easily on our cars, perhaps by a switch on the dash, instead of having the decision made automatically by a computer, I think this could gain us something, even without reducing the rotating mass of the unused pistons, etc., simply because we'd be running with the throttle open more than it is right now. Does that make sense? |
