Well that was stupid...

I did my SVX's annual oil change last night. I really should do it twice a year - once when it goes into storage and once when I take it out. I only put 3-5k miles a year, though.

Anyway, that wasn't the stupid part.

All my oil drain pans were, of course, full. So were some random plastic containers - orange juice bottles, kitty litter buckets, etc... I took one to Advance Auto to be emptied. What I didn't realize until seconds after I pulled the drain plug and the oil started overflowing onto the floor is that I took the wrong one to be emptied. I took the one that works okay for the Justy and Legacy, but won't hold the contents of the SVX's oil pan.

What a mess...

But it's done. I have a big road trip starting tomorrow, so I figured a gesture towards the car might convince it to continue the awesome reliability record.

We're driving to Milwaukee tomorrow evening, staying with my dad overnight, and then driving with him and my brother to Eagle River.

Eagle River?!?!?!

Then my wife and I are driving back down to spend a few days in Chicago to celebrate our anniversary.

Good to know I'm not the only one...

I pulled a similar trick the first time I changed to oil in the SVX. Just didn't occur to me that 6+ quarts would be more than the silly drain pan/container would hold.

Hey, have a great trip.

. I think everyone who does it themselves have similar experiences or will at some point. I used to let my friends who don't have a place to change their oil use my driveway. That is until I realized how much practice it takes to get it right with minimal spillage. The last time I think the guy must've gotten more on the driveway than the pan. It isn't like my driveway doesn't have enough oil stains already with a drippy XT and BRAT but then again, that's my mess.

As for the annual oil change. From what I've been able to come up with you should be fine as long as it is a good brand name oil with add. to keep it from breaking down. I too am on the annual plan for the SVX. I've actually thought about doing it 2x a year but the filter once just cause it is a pain to drop the front cover or to do it around it.

Have a great anniversary!

I have a similar story. I bought a plastic oil pan that was completely sealed except for a small hole that had a screw on cap. You could take the cap off and stick a wide, flat funnel into the hole to catch the oil. Well, everything went smoothly until I took the drain plug off. The opening into the pan was too narrow...oil was flowing faster than it was draining into the pan. In just a few seconds the funnel had completely filled and started to overflow onto the driveway. THAT was the messiest oil change I've ever done

I use Mobil 1. What kind of additive do you think I should be putting in with it?

As far as the annual plan, here is my question. If I only start and warm up a car and don't drive it any amount of miles, shouldn't I still be ok changing the oil every year?

As far as I'm concerned, but then I'm no chemist or engineer.

If I routinely started but never drove a car over the course of a year, I might be more concerned about what's going on inside the transmission than inside the crankcase.

Regarding oil in engines that sit idle: By the nature of their use, this is an issue with piston-engined, general aviation aircraft, and corrosion on engine internals is apparently the killer. I believe I'd idle my idle ride as often as feasable (primarily to drive moisture from the crankcase) and change the oil twice a year, regardless of composition, brand, or additives.

re additives

One additive that I swear by is Z Max. It's alittle pricey about 25 bucks when on sale, but over the last 3 years iv'e used it all my cars seem to run smoother then they did . The manufacturers claim the linkite base soaks into metal anyway it seems to work, and even if it doesn't the myth makes me feel better.
