Question Thoughts about the Dodge SRT4?

Just wanted your thoughts on the Dodge SRT4. My gf loves neons and I saw one while we were car shopping.

Nice car. Kinda racer-boy looking, but really quick for a FWD sports car...

Stock they run like 13.7-14.0 in the 1/4 on street tires, and modified, some people have gone mid 12's on slicks!!!

Those cars have some serious performance. Dodge did a great job on the engine, but a poor one on the exterior.

You get what you pay for. This car is cheap. But....you can't really beat it from a power/price standpoint. I think it is too much power for fwd though. A bit a of a mistake for daimler-chrysler.

Maybe, but with the new Quaiffe LSD on the front axle found on '04 SRT-4's, the car can handle the power a lot better. Those things are so quick though....I think C&D got a top speed of 152mph!!!

If you can gain an entire second due to tires, it is too much power for the drivetrain...

FWD is not the best setup. IMO it was a mistake.

The drivetrain layout is not my one of choice. However, the times I quoted were for a stock SRT-4 and a heavily modified one on slicks. Adding slicks alone to a stock SRT-4 lowers your time by about 0.3-0.4 seconds, but that's the same reduction that the RWD guys get.

I also feel the car was a mistake as FWD. A nice AWD drivetrain would have been much better, but have raised the cost by about 2-3K according to one article I read.

Just my $0.02...

I think it's a bad idea. This is why I don't understand the point of these cars. Don't get me wrong i'm all for cheap and powerful cars...being the owner of one of the better examples of said machine. However, the SRT has several shortcomings that to me would be unacceptable (and I mean OTHER than the fact that it's a Chrysler product, which in my mind is probably it's biggest shortcoming)...

1 - It's not setup to handle it's power...FWD just doesn't cut it at that level of power, and it's handling, while great as neons go, just isn't up to handling the power safely.

2 - It's equipment level is no better than a plain old neon. I would expect some options, like ALL power, maybe leather, a good stereo...etc.

3 - Neons are problematic to begin with, and force feeding air into an engine that has problems to begin with will produce very predictable results. Also, you will be paying much more for parts for that motor.

4 - It's just about the ugliest car that chrysler makes. Surpassed only by dodge trucks.

Note about the tires...and another reason I think the FWD setup was a huge mistake...my T/A runs about a 13.0-13.2 sec quarter in stock form. Throw on a set of Nitto 555R's (and make sure you have the rear end to handle it) and it'll run a consistent 12.6-12.8 quarter. You can't get that kind of consistency from FWD cars.

It's a Neon, plain and simple.

Not the biggest fan of the Neon platform. I think that the "American" market is finally owning up to what people want, and that is a domestic "Tuner" car. I won't argue with numbers though. At the strip in Idaho, there is this young guy throwing down really consistent 14's - 15 second runs with a few mods.

Thats quite a bitter statement. Have a friend with one, its an 04 with the LSD and it goes...and good. it has no problem handling the power, you can floor it in first gear(not something you can do with most fwd turbo's), and it royally woops my ass...you know, after a few hundred feet

The interior is where they saved all the money. Cheapest plastics on earth and wind up rear windows while the fronts are power (so you can challenge people at a light on your right???) I think last year was the last year the base neon had a 3-speed auto!!! Come on now. Get a WRX for $3k more. Or a 2.5RS for $1k more. Or if you can try a Golf or Civic Si. Say no to fords all together.

Andy has the widest variety of puking smileys anywhere. Look at that - he even has one of a greenish smiley puking up a baby giraffe.

Where do you get this stuff, man?
