Exclamation Tough news.

Hi Bilko.

Sorry to hear you have box problems.

What mileage is on the car, and was the tranny ever rebuilt? Do you know?

Assuming I read your diagnosis correctly, your box is not shifting from 2 to 3. Correct?

Assuming this is the fault, then 4 range will not be obtainable, as 3 is not selected.

If the brake band was slipping, you would not have 2 or 4. However, it would rev up for no reason on going through 2 to get to 3, so this is probably not your problem or you would have mentioned the revving.

Now, assuming no shift from 2 to 3 is your problem, the troubleshooter suggests three items as follows, two addressable on the car, the third, the box has to be taken out and stripped.

First two first, they are a faulty control unit [TCU] the tranny computer in other words, or a valve sticking.

The third one is high clutch slippage. If you have been a bad boy, too aggressive, , then you may have burnt this clutch, and the box needs a rebuild.

Here is my advice for what it is worth. If you need to rebuild the box, you will have to replace the valves with a new set anyway. So do it now, it is relatively cheap, if it fixes the problem you are good to go. The valve chest is taken out from the tranny sump, no need to remove the box.[you will lose the oil, of course.] Go to an automatic transmission specialist, they will know how to do it. There are six valves in the cassette, replace them all.

If the new valves give you four gears, problem solved. If it does not work, Tony Shale will have a TCU in the car he is parting out. You could possibly contact him to buy it, or he might let you try it. If that fixes the problem, you will be getting off cheap, and have new valves, which are a wear item anyway.

If both of these fixes do not work, then you have no option but to have the box taken out, stripped and rebuilt, as it can then only be the worn high clutch if our diagnosis is correct. The rebuilder will fit new clutch material to all the clutches in the tranny. They tend to wear together, nobody ever replaces just one.

Best of luck with it, I hope it is just the valves.

Joe

Wink The old 1-2 or 1-3?

Sounds like you need a rebuild.

What you have just described sounds much more like driving in 1, slipping through 2, which is burnt out, then going into 3. So you would be driving in 1 and then 3.

It can't go on to 4, as the brake band is worn.

If the car is doing about 60 at 3000rpm, then you are in third, not second.

If what I have described above is correct, be careful driving it. With the revving and slippage, 2 will get worse. Then the car will not be able to attain the conditions for moving up to 3, and you will have to drive it home in first. Get it fixed pronto, best advice.

Phil is near you, see if he recommends a tranny specialist nearby. There is a thread where garages are recommended if you search.

Joe

The above descriptions sound exactly what happened to me!

I'm still waiting to get mine back (it took 3 weeks to get parts!), but won't be able to tell you the problem, as I had a different box rebuilt. Good luck!

If you need a rebuilder, I now have a list of 3 or 4 that the guys and my own research found.

Let me know if you need them.
