Fuel Injector Cleaner

Has any one used fuel injector cleaner? If you do, what do you use and how often?

I have used "GUMOUT" gas additive three times in the past year. Each time I notice that the power improves. Does any one know how this stuff works?

I've never used it, but I've heard that Redline makes a good product

Fuel injector cleaner

I've been using the Redline fuel injector cleaner since for over 10 years on a variety of cars. I put it in the SVX about every 10th tank. I have never had a fuel delivery related problem on any car I've owned (many well over 125K miles), and it has taken care of some loping idle issues on some cars I have owned in the past (Mustang SVO and Merkur XR4Ti). I can't say I've ever seen a power or performance change from the car. Good product, though sometimes difficult to find.

How do you discribe a loping idle? Is this when you start the car after it has sat over night and then the idle speed decreases and then increases and then decreases and cycles several times? My car has always done this. However it does not do it after it has been restarted after sitting for about 3 or 4 hours.

I usually run about 400 miles on a tank, so you put in the cleaner evrery time the oil is changed? A friend of mine does that too.

Loping idle

On the two Ford products I mentioned, the cars would start and the idle would climb to about 1500 rpm and drop to 600 rpm and cycle like this constantly. I remember the problem being worse when the cars were cold but its been about 7 years since I had this problem. Another car I owned that had this problem was caused by an idle motor or idle air control valve. This was a cheap part on that car though probably not on the SVX.

Well that does seem simil,ar to my SVX although not as bad.

Does any one provide a service for cleaning fuel injectors?

I think I may have a dirty one that effects the higher rev's more. My car also has a problem in that the engine does not run smooth at higher rpm. It all most sounds like a miss but not quit. It sort of makes a whoop noise. Not at idle just at higher rpm or at full throttle. It causes a vibration.

Yes, you can have the injectors cleaned -- I'm sure the dealership can do it, or a reputable independent shop. Another good fuel system cleaner that has gotten good reviews is Chevron Techron. It is a little easier to find than the Redline also.

isnt it the same stuff thats in the gas when you fill at chevron?

Is it just a lot more ocncentrated?
Or is it altogether a different beast?

Not really the same animal. I worked for my uncle's chevron station for a couple of years out of high school, and also did advertising for a Chevron distributor here in Owensboro. He told me that "techroline" (which is their gasoline additive at the pumps) is pretty much Chevron's "trade name" for the standard detergent additive that all stations put in their gasoline. Different brands place "trade names" on their detergents to make their gasoline more "marketable." Techron contains the "detergent" "techroline" but also carries other ingredients specifically formulated for the fuel system.

I have always had great luck with Berrymans B12 in the tank... I have used this on all my cars for 20 years and I have never had any fuel delivery problems... Carbs or injection. I usually do it (one can in the gas) when I change the oil, or when I know Im goin on a long trip. As a rule... I found that anything that says Berrymans, DELIVERS. Sonny
