Question Tap. . Tap . . Tap Engine Noise???

For some months, my SVX has been tapping (engine noise) mainly at startup. It's getting worse. The tap is louder and seems to last longer.

A week ago, my son asked me about "that stick you used to check in your old car?". I hadn't been checking the dipstick in my SVX because the oil level had been so constant, but I thought I should show him. Guess what! >> It was over two quarts low! [Oil change about 4 months prior @ about 8,000 miles ago (Redline 10/30 synthetic)] I had been leaving oily spots on ground (originally thought this explained them, but found oil drippings were a loose tubing leaking power steering fluid). Sooo, I guess it's burnin' some oil! [Expensive Taste] YIKES!

What is the differential diagnoses doctors? THANKS for any HELP!

How many miles on the SVX? I have had some valve adjuster taping at cold start. I have been using Marvel Mystery Oil with Mobil 10W-30 dino oil and it seems to have gone away.

Is it burning, or is it leaking through the seals/valve cover gaskets. The "Evil Twin" doesn't leave oil drips on the driveway, though it uses quite a bit of oil. While underneath, this weekend, I noticed major oil wetting on the passenger's side cam seal area, the center seal and both valve covers -- that would 'splain it. Right Lucy?

Check underneath with a flashlight, or, look closely at your belt covers to see if there's any "wetness." May be time for a seal change. I prefer Harp seals, myself. Kidding!

How long do you leave the MMO in the motor?

I have been adding a 1/2 quart of MMO in place of oil with each of the past 3 oil changes. I change the oil just about every month.

I tried some of the CD-2 detergent, but that didn't seem to stop the sticky lifter. Maybe I'll try some of the MMO.

I started to use the MMO because I was unhappy with the oil consumption. I still have not decided if it is improving for sure but I have driven 500 miles with a light foot and no oil usage since the last change. Now I am trying a more spirited foot for the next 500 miles.

Once upon a workday dreary,
While I staggered, weak and weary,
To my SVX to drive it to the store.
Suddenly, there came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my engine bore.
Tis a lack of oil, I muttered, only this, and nothing more.

HAPPY HALLOWEEEEEEEN!!!!!!

Poetic license . . . . . Once upon a time in a land far far away . .

Roses are Red
Violets are Blue
But I'm getting a little pissed off trying to fix all the little things that are going wrong (most intermittent) with my SVX that I can't figure out and that noone else can figure out either!

Oh! Sorry! I feel better now. . . I'll be OK, now!

P.S. I know I should know, don't laugh, but what is LOL?

Sorry, James, we're not making fun of your plight. Believe me, we all feel your pain. I've been dealing with niggling little, mostly intermittent problems since '99. Thing about it is, if this group can't figure it out, then, there's little hope (generally speaking) of finding out, mainly, because this collective has experienced practically every problem associated with this vehicle.

Hang in there, and we'll all hang in with you. All is not lost.

I know, you're laughing with me!

I put the MMO in yesterday. It's a little better.

I noted no oily residue on tailpipes. I guess that's good news! Maybe oil is leaking and blowing back, as suggested (?).

My car just started the intermittent rough idle problem again. Must be temperature related! Please visit thread: "sputtering and jerky idle" to see if you can help. THANKS!
