Unhappy I need some advice......

I'm so frustrated right now I'm thinking seriously about selling Penny.
Just spent nearly $2K fixing things that needed fixing and now I discover more.
Kept hearing an intermittent grinding sort of noise in reverse so I decided it was time to take her in to AAMCO to have the tranny checked out (still under warranty). Well, the tranny itself is fine. But it appears that the front diff is shot. Labor to take it apart, determine the problem, rebuild it, reinstall it: $420.00. Cost of parts: anyone have any idea?
What sucks is that they have to take it apart to determine what needs to be fixed, then the parts have to be ordered. So I'm probably looking at downtime of two weeks or more.
Anybody have any thoughts, suggestions, a good idea to collect the insurance money?

Michelle,
Hang in there. I'll let you know if you're getting a good deal. Mine's in the shop now for the exact same deal.

My remedy was to buy a second SVX so I didn't have to be without, when one went into the shop.

Why two weeks or more in the shop A "shop" so so inefficient would be out of business quick time in this part of the world. A courtesy car would be provided while the car is off the road. The continuing reports of shoddy workmanship also amaze me when coming from the land of the automobile What the hell goes on

re: hang in there michelle

hang in there michelle and if a good deal comes along, pick up another svx for backup. i know the feeling of not having the svx which made me keep an eye out for a good opportunity and a good deal. hopefully once they get that problem resolved you won't have anything else major for 12 months .

trevor, i believe that inefficiency of the 'shops' here stems from the lack of easily attainable parts for our svx's. when my steering rack and pinion started smoking, i could not find a single source in the state of georgia that had one unit that i could purchase. every parts dealer i called gave me a timeframe of 1-2 weeks. the same for front axles. apparently they do not stock many parts for a limited, out of production, low volume sales cars.

i know you've seen alot of posts about shoddy workmanship on the board, but i believe people never write about excellent workmanship in these parts. if they did, the posts of excellent workmanship may outnumber the posts on shoddy workmanship. i'm sure that there are varying levels of competencies and the difference in the ratio between good to bad technicians worldwide is not that great.

yes

I agree. When I walked into one of the dealers here to have a rear bearing replaced ... he looked me straight in the eye and said, "is one of those still on the road?". Then he laughed.... (I didn't think it was funny) They only had one bearing in stock so I had them replace the right one. I will have to wait a week for the left one to be replaced... Do you want me to tell you about my Speedometer....?

Hang in there Michelle. I just rebuilt my transmission too. The 5 speed for gosh sakes. I thought that would be the last one to go. Just remember how much fun they are and what they really mean to you when they run like they should. Good luck.

You guys are really not helping me here.....
I did not expect commiseration, I expected advice, some sort of great solution......
Guess it ain't gonna happen....
For now Penny's parked until I can decide how to go....
Rebuild the front diff, or try to find an already rebuilt replacement....
Help!!!

Sorry, Michelle. You're talking to a guy who's already put over 5 Grand into tranny work alone on the first SVX and am now going deeper.

You've put too much into Penny to just slough her off. How much would you spend on a new car? How much would it depreciate, the moment you drive it off the lot? Probably more than the monies you'd put into the transmission repairs. Previous expense is less than what interest on a loan would cost on a new (or newer car) plus insurance costs.

If enough of us with know-how were there, we'd jack Penny up and do the work for you. All you'd have to do is buy parts (and maybe a case of beer or two), but, unfortunately, we're scattered hither and yon. We're with ya, girl, even though we're not there. Hang tough.

I know that these are not easy decisions to make. What to do, what to do. I had to figure out whether to rebuild the tranny that I have, or to buy a used one, or go back to the auto tranny. None are straight forward answers or decisions. I guess you have to do your homework and figure out the lesser of the evils. Good luck, and I will be here if you have to talk like many more of the members.

Michelle,

Take it from someone who spent over 10k in a year on ONE SVX. Sometimes, it's worth it to toss it out and start all over. However, it all depends on a couple of things. One of them is how attached you are to the SVX -- in your case to penny.

In my case, my 94L (red money pit) had to go. In a SINGLE year, it stood in the shop for nearly 5 months. I had to rebuild the tranny 3 times and a diff once and at the end of the day, diff leaked, engine was pumping out oil (it was beyond leaking). I looked at the car and ask the ultimate question. Do I still want this POS. The answer came back to me. NO. It was a FWD SVX. It was a 94L. I wanted an AWD SVX and one was there near where I was.

Currently, my 94LSi has a shot front diff. It had since may. This one, I am not letting go. I am looking for another SVX but I am keeping this one. At over 200k miles, it's not in the best shape. The hood needs a repaint. I need new head/tail lights. I need new interior panels and such. Out of the 3 that I had in the past, this one is probably in the worst shape. But I am keeping her till she falls apart or I fall apart. I just re-wired all the wires inside the car for a bunch of AV stuff last week.

When you go out and get another used SVX, you will not know what's wrong with it regardless of what the previous owner/sales person tell you. With penny, at least you know most of the stuff is fixed.

When I fixed my diff at AAMCO two years ago on the moneypit, it ran me about 800 bucks for parts and labor. If I were you, I'd give them that 800 rather than loose all the work you have already put in the car.

Ultimately, it is your what you say that counts but I'd keep her for now.

L

ps. hope this is helpful

unless you like and prefer the revised 4EAT SVX automatic, then save your pennies, drive it for a while & do up the 5 speed conversion. So much less to go wrong & much easier to work on manual gearboxes. Just my $0.02, when (not if) the gearbox goes on the SVX I purchased last week. I'll be converting it over to a manual. I'd love to do a 6 speed, but it isn't cost effective. smallcars kit is rather nice.

Thanks everyone for all the support you've given me.
Penny will get fixed, I can't afford to sell her!
And I'd probably end up with another used car with a whole new set of problems.
I'll keep ya posted!
