Bah! Who needs all this "wireless" stuff. Back when I was in the military we just punched holes in the walls of the dorms and ran our own cabling, then we played games like Doom where you couldn't even look up and down, and we used IPX/SPX instead of TCP/IP. That's the way it was and we liked it!

Hi Green

Yes, Linksys are good stuff I heard.

But even cheaper (I guess) is D-Link, and they have external antenna connectors to.

The only thing with the D-Link gear, is that most of their FW (FirmWare) releases are NOT good!

If you are going D-Link you can use the DWL2100AP, wich is good, and even has SNMP and a Telnet server.

The older ones only have a web server for configuration.

I have tested and used most of them, but the 2100 is the most stable and competent one.

I also have built and tested many antennas, including Yagi's and the "cantenna" (Pringle's can) , anf they'll all work just fine

But if you wish to transmit the signal VERY far, you can use a old parabolic dish and a standard "patch" antenna (8-10dBi) as feed

One thing to remember though, if you are going to use external antennas, is that the "hidden station" phen. is likely to occur (that is when 2 given clients cannot "see" eachother, thereby colliding). This only occur in "AP" mode, and not in "bridged" or other PtP modes.

Here you can calculate your signals if you wish

/Sonny

But the real question is can it run Linux?

Actually a useful utility I wish it had is Windows Remote Desktop.

RIght now, they're all over ebay. Sony has discontinued the Clie line. You can get a Sony "recondidioned" unit for 459.00. Cheapest I've seen new is 499.00. I was fortuneate to find mine on e-bay -- new -- in box -- for 435.00.

That's pretty cool... I use VNC on all the computers that are on my network... Good way to keep everyone in check and provide help whenever I can
