Why a new SVX in 2003 would work...

It's a different world than in 1992. Brand recognition for Subaru then was much different. Even Legacys @ $18,000 weren't selling well then, let alone a $30k sport/sedan. Now, if Subaru were to release an SVX -- hyping the AWD/power/high tech -- it would stand a much better chance. If it was me, I'd use the same engine as in the original, offer a supercharged version, 6 speed manual, tweak the styling, and have at it. Hype it for 6 months prior to release. Keep it at $30k (the 350z is $25k). Styling I think would be a major factor in the success, but based on what else is out there, people are ready for some radical designs. Just a few thoughts...

I think it would have to be lighter, geared so the 0-60 time is fast (since htats all the media cares about), and have a manual. :P

I agree it would work. I think the idea is extremely valid but I would keep with GT status. In my sorry opinion, I think that the 30K buyers of a AWD car want to enjoy luxury and safety more than numbers. That is what Subaru targeted then and that should be the new target. Subaru alienated the buyers of the SVX when it was discontinued. It was definatly in the game with Lexus, BMW, Infinity, Mercedes and other over priced game setters. Those people moved on to those companies when there wasn't a player for Subaru any more. And there are people now that know what Subaru is all about. If they can regain those old buyers and gain a few of the new ones it would be a success.

Just a thought. The BMW 3 and 5 series are definatly a mark to look to in auto sales and numbers. Why, with all that Subaru has to offer do they not really have something in line for that market. For goodness sakes, even Cadillac has a 3 chaser. I guess you can call the WRX a 3 chaser but in reality, if I went to look into buying a 3 I would not consider a WRX. I don't understand that stigma but advertising makes a view what it is.

Here's to hoping for a SVX of the future (with funny windows!)

It would be nice but Subaru name has yet to be made in the bigger car group. They have made their name in the WRC arena but no one cares about the other Subarus apart from the Subaru owners. Just tossing in my 2 cents and a bit of reality.

I think Subaru has always been thought of as "the makers of those quirky little 4wd cars" and possibly always will be. Some of us know better but the majority of the buying public do not. If Subaru ever wants to go into the high end arena they will have to do what the other Japanese manufacturers did, start a new Luxury Division with some fru-fru name. I just hope they didn't wait too long to do so.

Aw Larry, don't spoil the dreams

Safety legislation will stop a new SVX, with 3" needed between the engine and bonnet (hood) and higher screen pillars for those too lazy for seatbelts, the SVX would never look the same.

Andy,

I don't want to shatter dreams but my training forces me to be realistic. The future holds wonderful things for automobiles. That is why I associated myself with the M-car project.

I would love a new SVX with more hp this time and a manual with navigation and the works. Most peope who don't know about the car think its way stronger and faster than it really is. All the other previous GT's were way stronger (supra, 3000gt) It would be be nice for it's power to catch up to its looks. Unfortuanatly it seems Subaru will never release such a beast in this lifetime.

even if Subaru doesn't release a true replacement for the SVX, they ARE at least stepping up the performance in their cars. the WRX STi will be arriving next year, and turbo Legacy's and Forester's will be coming soon as well. they won't have the class of the SVX, but will still be fun, affordable, reliable AWD cars with some kick. i'm optimistic they will produce a GT, maybe not with the SVX name and controversial windows, but i think it will come.

Who makes GTs anymore? Like freaking NOBODY. Yeah, they do in Japan, but here in America, those g** d*** SUVs killed a LOT of sports cars/ GT cars. THey aren't coming back until people quit buying stupid SUVs.
