Need help with speedometer!!

I need to know which wire under the dash (above and to the left of the driver's feet?) carries the "speed signal" to the speedometer.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Dave,

I checked both my '92 CD and the relatively useless Chilton manual. Couldn't find it in either. Sorry pal. Gave it a shot!

Howz your world? Should start getting cold there again soon, huh?

Thank you! That will keep my mileage down!!!
Seriously, I'm working on a mod and it's 99.99% complete. I'll explain and post pics as soon as I can.

Thank you,
David.

In case you really weren't kidding, some cars also log mileage in their computer.

I've heard that some (maybe all?) Subaru computers can also keep track of the highest speed the car was driven.

I know it has been a while, but did you ever find out which wire carries the pulse from the speed sensor?
I'm connecting a Terratrip rally computer and need to use the same wire.

Hi Smerrithew

Have a look in the following post, may answer your quest.

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...&threadid=6784

Word of warning! Phil is describing putting in a pulse invertor on a Japanese OEM car. It is possible the US variant uses different wiring colours. Many parts of the electrics are different, the security wiring, the automatic seat belts etc.

However, there would not seem to be a reason to use a different loom for this purpose, but if you follow the advice about using a multimeter between the block at the ECU and the block on the tranny, you will find the wire, whatever colour it is on the US model.

Best of luck

Joe

Word of warning #2! 92s have the separate wire from the tranny chassis to the ECU. Anyone looking for the wire on a 95 or later has a different task, as the wire is included in the main loom coming from the tranny.

Word of warning #3!

Scott

I know you will have sussed this, but when Phil talks about locating the wire on the "driver's side" of the tranny, he means the RHS for Japanese and English and Irish cars.

OK?

Joe

Good points!
Thanks Joe.
And no, it didn't occur to me that Phil was talking about RHS, so double thanks.

Success!
I found all the connections I needed without having to bring any new wires through the firewall!

The key wire is the Yellow-Red wire that goes into the ECU (exactly the way Phil described in his post). That wire carries the pulse from the speed sensor.
I also found a good 12 ga. power wire that is "on" all the time behind the kick plate cover on the passenger side in front of the door. There is also a matching black wire that is probably a good ground, but I chose not to use that. Instead I grounded to a bolt that fastens that strange white plastic container (what is that anyway??) to the firewall.

My new baby just ran her first Winter Rally! An all-nighter that cruised the twisty, snowy back roads of Ontario from 10:30 till 7:30. I drove a bit cautiously because I didn't want to scratch her beautiful pearly finish, but still finished 9 out of 31 entries.
She handled beautifully with new Nokian Hakkapeliita snow tires.

And you know what? All the WRXs and others were complaining about their shifting arms getting tired! I just smiled! The automatic was wonderful. I just slipped between 2 and 3 whenever appropriate - didn't spend much time in D at all.

SVX makes a lovely rally car for this type of rally, but on faster, performance rallies, it it would not be too good because of the low clearance - it would bottom out too much. I suppose a skidplate might help, but I still don't think it's worth the risk of cracking up the car.

Sorry - that was a little off topic, but just had to tell you about it.

Out for now.
Scott

Success all round!!

Thanks Scott for keeping us up to date, and congratulations on a successful rally debut.

Lucky the wires were the same colour, as we speculated. I know from the experience of another member, the later cars have totally different looms and colours. The price of progress.

I am going to use Phil's information myself soon, it will change the speedo from kms to miles, and also defeat the Japanese speed limiter for me.

Good show dude . We SVXers may not be too hot on the quarter mile, but throw in a couple of hundred more and we can do it ing.

Joe

that's the #1 quote I get from people. After we did 1300 miles in 2 days, everyone was tired and looked horrible. My co-driver and I were wide awake. After a few of them took the SVX for a spin they said "now I know why you guys weren't tired"

1300 miles!! wow!
What rally is that Mike? Mine was about 300 miles and it took about 9 hours and I thought it was long! My navigator is my 12 year old son and we normally run in navex rallies that last about 4 hours. This drivex was about the limit of our endurance.

Glad to know there are some other SVXers who are REALLY appreciating their cars. I couldn't stand to have my SVX on show but seldom drive it over 35mph.
It's like my wife who pays over a $1000 for good china plates, and only brings them out once a year!!

Scott

SVX! A terrible thing to waste!
