how many miles can we get

I just bought a 92 claret lsl loaded with 136,000. The car is in great shape except for the clearcoat peeling. I have heard from several places to expect only like 175,000 miles before a rebuild. I know it all depends on how it was taken care of. I thought subarus went for hundreds of thousands like toyotas. The guy i bought this off of had 512K on his last subaru (wasnt a svx). I bought this car really cheap for a work car but the more i find out about it, the more i want to keep it nice and oringinal. I bought it for winter driving to work. I guess these cars go really good in snow. I know my 87 xt turbo was awesome in the snow. Well, does anyone have really high miles on here or has anyone had to rebuild. Thank you.

Another thing to consider is the head gasket. Its 19 years old now and it probably will need to be done soon because of the age.

One of my 2 1996 svxs has 264345 miles on it and it still runs strong but the transfer is beginning to go out again

Sure, just show up here with a low milage SVX and make us all feel bad!

Other than the head gaskets going bad, and the occasional rod bearing these 3.3s are just freeking WONDERFUL!
I just bought a 226K SVX yesterday, without worries, or a roadtest.
Lady Di takes her 208K SVX on trips with out as much as a quick check over.
Change your fluids.
Don't drive Her hard untill She is warm.
Enjoy!

She has pretty good miles but it sat for a while and the clearcoat is peeling. Not much to look at. THe interior is almost perfect. I bought it for $1500 and new i needed a water pump. So, i got the pump and timing belt and thermostat and as they were putting it on they found a gas leak where the lines go up near the drivers rear tire, a bad ball joint wich i had to order and no telling when it will get here, exhaust leak and the rotors are all scratched up like crazy. If i can get a good driver for under $2500, I will be happy. I just cant wait to drive this thing. Oh, i need 2 new tires too. I really wish the clearcoat looked better.

It's AWD so you need to change 4 tires at one time unless you get two matching tires with similar tread left. Otherwise it's not good to the drivetrain.

You can always make it look better later.

I'm sure as long as they are the same size and the same end of the car they would be fine. 2 of the tires wont pass inspection. I will probably paint the car next year after everything else is done. I am concerned about the mechanical stuff first. I hope to have this car 30 years from now.

No, with Subaru's all wheel drive, having different treads can and will affect the life of the transmission. You need matching size and tread and matching tread depth...

I guess i will have to buy 4 new ones then, that sucks! I've already found a gas leak, ball joint all brakes and rotors are bad. Oh well, looking forward to the finished product.

4 tires are cheaper than a new transmission

Re: how many miles can we get

Nate, we are talking total odometer mileage, not gas mileage. As for the tires, the transmission cannot receive extra stress from mismatched tires, the vicous clutch differential (that engages the rear wheels) is what would receive extra stress.

Yes, but that will cause the fluid paths to become clogged with material and eventually burn up the transmission. Just ask the many who have run mismatched tires and had their transmission fry after a few months...

and i now see that they are talking about total mileage... Sometimes I'm not fully awake or am thinking of another thread when i respond.... I apologize...previous post now edited

Re: how many miles can we get

4 matching tires with equal tread wear is absolutely essential.
