Alternator woes
Ok... So i had a bad alternator, christmas tree dash and what not. So i got a reman from checker (only ones who could get it within 2 weeks. ) This was about 3 months ago. So yesterday i'm drivin down the road, bam xmas tree dash again. So i call checker, they order me another, and i went and got it this morning....
So i slap the thing on, do the complete job, belts tight, covers on and everything... Go to put the neg back on the battery and POP!!!!!!!!!! SMOKE!!!!!!! BAM!!!!!!!!!!! And i was like WTF!?!?!?! So i tear the whole thing apart again to be certain i didn't F anything up. I didn't, its all perfect exactly how it should be, so i put it back together, try the negative again and nothing.... The main (only i believe) fusible link is fried. So i go back over it all AGAIN to make sure its all chill, throw another fusible link in (have extras) and ZZZTTTTT smokes up into nothing before i could pull it back off.... I dont have another of the right size fusible link now so sh*t. My question is, wtf happened? The first thing in my mind was somehow the alternator was bad, but i dont really know enough about the internals of them. So could it be shorted in there or something? wtf? thats all i messed with at all, and like i said its all perfect. Any ideas?

The fuse link provides short circuit protection for the alternator. You have a short circuit within the alternator or in the wiring to the alternator. Disconnect the wiring from the alternator and if all is then OK, the short must be within the alternator.

Thanks trevor, did just that before i read your post (john on subaruxt.com posted the same) and the link survived no problem. Short within the alt i'm guessing. Bastards, but they said they're at least going to replace my link and the alt for free... but stilL!

I would consider ordering one from subaru.... I've seen more than a few computers fried in cars with reman alts from places like that...
