I was trying to say good things about the SVXi sound insulation.

If you can hear a "normal" tick with all your windows closed, either you have Superman type hearing or your car might have lost some of its insulation.

I'm not meaning to offend anyone.

I wouldn't worry to much. Mine has had a knock since I got it over a year ago and I've put 18k miles on it with no engine problems at all. I've also had it down the dragstrip 9 times on top of that. It's pretty loud when first started and usually either goes away or turns into a faint little knock when warm.

I wonder if that 'knock' at start-up is from piston slap? When I had an SVT Ligthtning, piston slap was quite common in those s/c trucks on cold starts.

Yeah, let me backtrack and say that any LOUD tick or knock from the engine could be bad news. But my GL wagon made a rat-a-tat-tat that was very noticable from the drivers seat, and was still running when I sold it some 50,000 miles later at over 200,000 miles.

I was at a car show 3 years ago Car had 50,000 on it then I had it running with the hood open and a glass of water on the engine cover. A guy stuck his hand in the engine compartment I yelled watch out its running. I have walked up to my car and can't hear it.

I wonder if there is a difference with synthetic oil or regular oil.

Let's try this again.....it is normal if you have a tick that is just barely audible with the engine fully warmed and all your windows up. If you don't hear it....good for you, you have a quiet SVX. If you do hear it, don't worry, it's normal. If the ticking is excessively loud ALL the time, you may have other issues. This has nothing to do with insulation.

Ok heres the scoop. The knock is always barely audible and hasnt affected performance as far as i can tell. I bought it 5 days ago and put a thousand miles on it (cant stay out of the drivers seat hahaha). The oil was changed recently according to the sticker and the synthetic looks clean. Im replacing the fuel filter and doing a tune up on it tomorrow at my parents since dad has a heated garage. I also have to put the rear driveshaft back in it now that the exhaust and new rear diff is installed. Lots to get done this weekend. i also have the power steering belt going so that has to be replaced too. Regular upkeep for a 92 with 118,000 on it i would think. :-D GOD I LOVE THIS CAR!!!!!!!

How hard is a tune up? looks kind of closed quarters to me.

Here's a link to the How-To document on changing spark plugs.

I just had my tranny serviced at Jiffy Lube and it was a "power flush". Chike, what's the deal on the power flush, really don't want to rebuild my trans anytime soon. Can you fill me in?

Tom (Power on demand) said it best in post #14 in this thread:

Just think of leaving pond water in a large container for several weeks. When you come back, the larger particles will have settled to the bottom, while the clear water will be on top. This is also happeing in your transmision over the years. When you power flush, friction material and other deposits will be scattered all over the transmission which can lead to failure.

My wife had her old automatic 240SX power flushed at 90K miles and within 2 weeks the trans went out and had to be rebuilt for $1,800.

I'm not familiar with my subarus making any engine noises such as ticking, knocking or clacking during normal driving. I do have bad hearing though so ....

I took my '94 in to Jiffy Lube for a full service right after buying it, not knowing the power flush no no, and they refused to power flush it. Just drained and filled and had me come back a week later for a second drain and fill, no extra charge.
