question on a 92 svx
ok guys i was driving past a dealership that is selling two svx's a black and and a white there both 92's. the black is for 5495. and it looks in good condition but i really don't seem to trust anything under a 94. the car has 99k on it. now when i got my last svx from the same dealer it was a 96 lsi just near mint with 116k for 7500. now the 92 its nice but i feel that the price is extremly high for it and was wondering if i push with this dealer how far should i go down to get him to sell this car?

I wouldn't pay more than 3500 and it better have a warranty on the drivetrain.

I got mine for $4k with 160k miles so I say fair price for that one as well so make sure they have at least a 3k mile warranty or something to the effect.

Prices
I also believe that is much to high. I paid $7900 for a 97 LSi with 54K miles(perfect shape) and $2900 for a 96 LSi (excellent shape) with 143K miles. On my 92s the most I have paid was $2500 and the least is $500 (bad motor)--mileages from 96K to 148K.

I paid 5k for my 92, with a rebuilt engine and trans and new bearings. Didn't have to worry about the main things that go wrong on svx's.

In dec 2003 I paid $2,025 for the car plus like $150 in auction fees=$2175 So you could probly get them to drop it alot. maybe below 4,000 if your lucky or walk away a few times or something like that.

Retail value on a '92 in decent shape with those miles is over 6800. The dealer will always try to get as close to that as possible.
Trade in on it is way low, probably less than 3000. That means the dealer, whichever way they got a hold of the car, was only set down around 3000 for it... They have to make money on it, it's a business, but I'm sure you could probably get it for $500 to $1000 over what they paid, if you negotiate hard enough. Also, cash speaks louder than words. If you are looking to finance it through them, don't expect them to lower it much. If you show up with cash or an already approved loan through your own bank/credit union, I'm sure they'll be much more flexible with pricing. And to those telling you they paid 2500 for theirs, they either got real lucky, or they had access to an auction or wholesale resource. If through private sale, the person selling it was either desperate to sell or didn't care how much they got. Don't expect a dealer to let it go for anywhere close to that when they're asking 5400. Very rare a dealer will go anywhere less than 35% what they're asking for a used car.

Blue book price and what they are going for are two diffenent things. That is a place to start, but you should be able to do better than that.

Dealer
The 97 with 54K miles was bought for $7900 from a Subaru dealer. It was in another state and I did not know anyone.

bought mine for 3900 out the door with 118k on it. really good shape and no big problems with it at all. talk him down to at least that price if not lower. they wanted 4500 for it at first but i talked them down to 3500. after tax and title and so on 3900.
