New owner-Weird noises & smells

Hey I just got an SVX (94 L fwd with 97k..yeah i know the cheap model -lol-) blue, and i'm working on checking the timing belt and ect...but two issues i have noticed right away a buzzing noise comming from the back of the car upon accel at 1900 rpms & 3900 Rpms no matter what gear (it seems could be 1stor 2nd) and also an OIL burn smell under teh fenders and in the cabin area after hard use..those all the fluids look new and there doesn't seem to be leaks (not dripping on the ground anyway). OH and the seepdo says 160...almost got it to 120 with ease last night can it really go THAT fast..if not what is the top speed of these things in reality ? not that i need any more tickets -lol- just nice to know I have it if i need it out on inerstate 5 or sumthing..hope a cop doesn't read this. anywho any thoughts would help...thanks

Brock,
Welcome to the looney bin.

Is the "noise" constant, or does it vary with speed?

The oil smell could be several things, but, with your qualifier "after hard use," you might check and see if you've blown power steering fluid out of the cap on the reservoir. This is typical of the SVX. Also, small leaks in the lines leading from the transmission to the transmission cooler are typical, after the hoses begin to harden. You might check for leaks there. They won't leave drips, since the fluid is dripped onto the manifold (usually) and burned before they hit the ground.

I've been to around 135 with plenty of legs left. Top speed on a 94, I believe, is somewhere around 145 or so. '92's are reputed to top out just short of 155, if memory serves.

-lol- of course a former CHP officer had to respond, just my luck. Glad your retired now (j/k) uhmm the noise is constant at a certin RPM 1900 & 3900 doesn't matter what gear or speed...just at those rpm's i hear the "buzzing" noise comming from the rear kinda a high pitched sond you can hear over the road noise and it is rather loud...hum power steering fluid was a lil ow i did notice upon taking delivery..humm wonder if theres a connection...could this noise deal be caused by bearings...if so how do i know for sure?

Brock,

I've answered your question before in your first post.

I'd put money on it (again) that your buzzing noise is from your resonator. 2 of my SVXes did that. Only at certain RPMs. Chop it off and you'd be happy. A 50 buck mod (most likely the cheapest mod you can do).

As for the oil smell, I'd check your powersteering lines. Mine were cracked on my last SVX. It could happen. Or it could be the O Ring leak.

Please do not take his comments about the "state of the network" to heart. It's just his opinion and we let him run with it.

PS fluid is AFT and that smells different than motor oil when its burning on the exhaust manifold. Oil leaks that are some times hard to see are from behind the oil pump, valve cover gaskets, oil fill pipe o-ring, maybe the front/rear crank (No one with the leak yet) and cam seals. All of these oil leaks can have oil blowing past the engine to the exh manifold during high speed driving. The leaks can be hard to find if the engine is covered with oil to start with. The PS hoses should be leaking most of the time and a common place is the rear of the engine/passenger side. However, driving hard puts the oil containment system to the test.
Yada Yada Yada When the oil catches on fire get out of the car. LOL

What irony. I was just searching posts so that I could let Brock know who CHP was, and I came across this:

Brock,
You haven't asked any stupid questions. What you don't know, you don't know.

We hope we've helped, and, if the fellow who works on your car has internet access, and if he really wants to learn about the SVX, send him to this site. I'm pretty sure he'll find out most anything he'd like to know.

Don't stop asking questions, just cuz we're weirdos.

Interestingly enough, I do have a cap with a CHiP patch on it, in my closet.

I agree that the buzz is probably the resonator. My car had that problem when I bought it. While you are having the resonator done, take a look at the heat shields (for the cat converters). They are another common source of noise from underneath the car. They come loose and rattle. Or in my case, small rocks had gotten in and would rattle around on acceleration. Removing the rocks and adding a couple of new bolts and they are rattle free.

Good luck. Nice to see another Bay Area owner join in.

Brock's been printing out everything he can get his hands on about the SVX. I've helped a bit in his research on the car. In fact, I think I sent him the link to this site, and many others. I think it's great that he finally has a car that he REALLY cares about, and learn a great deal from. And maybe move to other cars (while keeping his SVX of course)!

Hopefully he can narrow down the smell with your guys help.
