little gas tank?

it seems that the most my gas tank will get me is about 12.5 gallons of gas before i refill it. i'm not running it down to the light, but it is definitely going down to the E, and when i fill it up it seems to only go just before the F. is this normal? it's not a huge deal but i can't drive more than 250 miles before refilling her up. anyone else experience this?

Re: little gas tank?

Once the low fuel LIGHT comes on, you still have around 4 gallons in your tank.... they are all like that. Just drive until the light comes on and know that you can still drive 60 more miles easily.

Re: little gas tank?

The gauges are notorious for being pessimistic. The tank is 18 or 18.5gal I don't remember which.

Re: little gas tank?

pretty sure it's 18.5. and the manual says i have about 2.5 gallons left when the light comes on. so i don't know. i'm afraid to overestimate it and run out of gas in the middle of nowhere, pennsylvania.

Re: little gas tank?

All SVX's have the same size tank. Believe the 18, don't believe the 2.5 gallons left for the light.

Re: little gas tank?

mine went to the light once, and it took about 13 gallons to fill up. i wish the dial would go all the way down when i turn the car off so i know how far it will go. i hate filling it this often. i'm not getting bad gas mileage though. i average 20-21 with twisty turny pennsylvania back roads, and occasional aggressive driving. ;]

Re: little gas tank?

The Fuel Light comes on when my needle is in the middle of the letter E on the gauge.
Like Hereish:

Then it still only takes 15 gal.

Re: little gas tank?

is there any way there could be crap in the tank making it less full? i have no clue. it's probably just sensing an empty tank when i have 4 gallons left. some day i should just drive around with a gas tank in my trunk till i run out and see how many gallons it takes to fill up.

My tank has taken 15+ gallons every time the light has come on for the last 8 years.
Never sooner, never later.
The light should come on when there is 3 gallons left, but it will go on and off depending on your inclination and acceleration.

It should come on steady with about 2.5 gallons left.

The gauge varies from car to car and even in the same car with varying conditions.

The light varies from car to car and even in the same car with varying conditions.

EVERY SVX CAME WITH AN 18 GALLON TANK

The problem with running it out of gas, is that some have had issues with that sucking crud into the fuel pump that normally doesn't get there. I've run cars dry a few time and never had a problem, but I know a few people that have had to replace a pump shortly after running out...

What Dave said. In my 10 years of SVX ownership, I've found that the gauge is extremely pessimistic. It is basically impossible to run out of gas in an SVX if you go by the gauge. I like it that way.

Re: little gas tank?

i guess that's a safety feature then. cause after 19 years, i'm sure lots of pretty, chunky gunk is on the bottom of that tank. problem solved. thanks, gentlemen. :]

Re: little gas tank?

Yeah I have run the tank down so that the needle is buried below E. Tried that a second time and ended up going for a bit of a walk. Since then I fill up when the light comes on. Most fill ups range from 13-16 gallons for me. Its a screwy gauge, just fill it up when it hits E. I got too used to knowing I had extra mileage and walked to a gas station, that had no cans and had to call a friend for help. Talk about embarrassing.
