oil changes

Look in my locker for info on synthetic oil. I recently changed my Mobil 1 at 8,600 miles.

Someone once explained synthetic oil to me like this:

Take a piece of metal and put it outside for twenty years. What will you have? A very rusty piece of metal, probably full of holes. Put a piece of plastic outside for twenty years and what will you have? The same exact piece of plastic. You see, man-made materials resist decomposing MUCH better than natural materials (when was the last time you saw a house with vinyl siding that was rotting?).

Just something to think about.

An unfortunate analogy, Dave. Holds for mild steel, but what about stainless steel, lead, zinc, copper, aluminium, chromium etc.

Also uPVC is decomposed by ultra violet light and becomes brittle with age. Check out 30 year old plastic trim an cars and compare it to any items made of the above.

After 58 years, I've noticed a a definite slow down in my performance. My engine doesn't pull as strongly as it once did and my driver's side sun visor is drooping more & more.

There are exceptions to every rule. However, if you do check out the plastic in a 30 year old car, I bet it held up better than the 30 year old chrome bumbers.

Thats your mild steel again. The chrome is only a thin plating, which never corrodes itself, just peels off the underlying rust.
