Broken EGR pipe - to replace or not.
I installed my Gruppe N motor mounts yesterday and in the process, discovered that the EGR pipe that runs from the passenger side exhaust manifold to the EGR valve is broken at the valve. The tip of the pipe where it broke off is covered with a lot of soot, which tells me that it's been broken for a while. This goes a long way in explaining why I still had a slight exhaust leak even after getting a brand new custom fabbed Y-pipe.
My question - do I need to replace it? I could just cap it off. A new one from subaruparts.com is only around 35 bucks. Does this affect mileage in any way? Bobby and Young Tom, did you run the EGR pipes with your header setups? |

My understanding is that all of the headers fabricated to date have not had provisions for connecting the EGR tube.

Is it only for emissions or is there a driveability issue with the use of and EGR? |

emissions only....you will throw a code if it isn't connected (I think).

No codes are thrown! I broke mine months ago dropping my trans.. I pinched the header end closed in a bench vice, and made a block off plate for the motor side with part of a soda can in place of the gasket. Was going to be a temp fix, and my new one is sitting with my tierods and ball joints, waiting for spring.. Haven't noticed any difference in performance, running, oil consumption, or mileage. BTW, I log over 500 miles a week commuting to work, not counting weekend driving, and noticed absolutely no change.
