Running a lp gas line Plumbers out there?

Got a heater for my garage the other day 20000btus of nice warmth. Called to have a 100lbs tank and regulator delivered and hooked up. Of course they want the piping already outside. Basically what the heater has now is a couple of black iron fittings and a valve running out of the heater. I would just need two elbows a 6 inch piece of pipe and then 3 feet of pipe to get what they want. 1/2 inch OD. Can I just use black iron? It'll of course be going outside so I'm assuming not. The mechanical/plumbing code guy who sits across the cubicle from me at the township says I can use whatever I want as it isn't regulated by the PA Statewide code. He suggested flare fittings and copper but I've never done any copper flaring and really don't want to. Ideas?

the old man says black steel is ok but you could use galvanized as well. He is recomending a 3/4" pipe comming to a T with a 3/4 dirt leg to a 3/4" gas cock. Then to a 1/2" reducer coupling then 1/2" to the heater. Use all Maliable couplers to stay to code. Good luck

Tom

PS the dirt leg should stop at a 3/4" nipple and a plug. The dirt leg needs to come stright down to catch and **** in the line. a 6" nipple should be sufficient for the leg

dirt leg= a vertical pipe that is capped on the bottom and the top is the T to the hortizontal gas pipe. It is meant to catch any dirt in the gas line before it gets to the heater. You probably know what I am talking about but just don't know his lingo.
