Tranmission cooler
I have and after market cooler installed by Subaru. The have bypassed the radiator tubing and are using only the addon cooler .
WHY??? Wouldn't it be better to install in series? |

early cars ('92's only?) had a fine screen inside the cooler in the radiator that would clog, and.......bye-bye transmission. what year is your SVX?

Landshark is correct; I installed a trans cooler on my '94 and bypassed the internal as well. It's probably one of the few parts where Subaru didn't 'get it right'.
Your transmission thanks you! Now, how about changing out that 'regular' trans fluid for some nice, fresh synthetic fluid and really treat your trans right! I'd recommend Mobil 1. It's more 'cheap insurance'. -Mark |

I have a new (to me)92 svx with 115,000 miles on it. I'm about to do my trans. mods. If I put the aftermarket trans cooler in parallel: won't I possibly get added cooling, or is the fear of that loose garbage backflowing to much of a risk. It is my understanding that if the radiator and the aftermarket cooler were installed in Parallel the fluid would follow the path of least resistance. My plan was to flush properly, install new cooler and filter, then fill with sinthetic. I'm getting so many mixed views. which is correct???

After much deliberating and flow calculations, I came to the conclusion that the best way forward is to install in parallel, unless you live in a cold climate. In that situation I would still recommend parallel but with a means of isolating in the winter.
If you do a search you will see a lot on this topic, with some recommending series. Any external cooler has to be an improvement so there probably isn't a 'wrong' way, just diffent degrees of improvement.

Within the flow path folder are the ATF Counter-Flow configurations, This uses a diverter valve to use only the stock cooler in winter but adding the external cooler in summer.

Sounds like i need a perma cool filter and temp gauge. Monitor temp and If you need the extra cooling add radiator cooler in parrell to protect against the little strainer stopping all flow. |
