full size spare?
how well does a full size spare, ie. extra wheel and tire, fit in the stock spare well?

The manual actually calls for you to store the full size wheel in the tire well when you change the tire to the spare. The floor wont sit flat then, though.

Doesn't fit too well. It's about 2x the width of the donut.

Fits OK [just]
The full size is the same diameter as the donut, but double the width, or depth as it is lying flat. In use, the floor of the trunk will be raised, and unsupported at the sides, so there is less space in the trunk for luggage. Some of this space lost can be clawed back by storing items in the well of the spare wheel, which is pretty deep. In Ireland and the UK, manufacturers rarely supply cars with get-u-home spares, or donuts. They are frowned on for safety reasons. Market wise, it can cost the manufacturer the cost of a sale. If two competing models are similar in price and spec, the one with the Mickey Mouse spare is likely to be left in the showroom. Our current Mondeo comes with a fullsize spare, and under the trunk floor is a 2" hard sponge gasket to support the floor. They obviously have the metal floor at the level of the donut for sale in Germany. Ford are smart enough to realise Irish or English buyers would consider the maker to be "mean" to supply the car without a proper spare. Joe

Full Sized Spare
I've had a full sized spare for 2 years or so now. If you're coming to reading you can check out the temporary handywork I did, if not I'll take a pic of it for ya. Basically I just got some birch plywood and som 1X4s and went to work. I've always planned to do something more attractive but as far as strength. I can sit on it and it won't break .

I had afull size tire in the trunk when I got my car and I have removed it so that I can use the trunk space. Then again if I was driving 1000 miles ( by myself or not skiing) I would most likely put it back in.
