Airbags went BANG!

I hit a pothole in a dark Parking lot recently.... I was turning sharply and accelerating toward the exit whet I hit the deep puddle at about 15 MPH.
I sustained No damage to My 96 Ebony beauty... BUT now the bags have to be replaced. New ones are nearly $2000.00 but fortunately I lined-up a couple that were salvaged from a parts car. THANKS slowner44... They will be here in a day or so.

This is my 7th SVX and I have pretty good mechanical skills and full set of Factory Shop Manuals.

3 questions:

(1) Is this a job I can safely tackle in my garage?
(2) Will the Airbag Deployment Computer reset automatically?
(3) Has anyone else experienced premature Airbag deployment?

Obviously, When this happened it startled the bejeezus out of me!
Fortunately, I sit back from the steering wheel so it didn't even knock my fedora off. However, it seems like this minor bump, shouldn't have set off the Airbags.

Get back to me if you have anything germane to share.

Re: Airbags went BANG!

I believe the air bag computer has to be replaced after deployment.
If you need one, I have one on my parts car. The dash is already apart so it's not too hard to get to.

Re: Airbags went BANG!

Hmmm... I have read the Manuals and the supplements and I can't find that information. Can you give Me a clue of where to look for this?

Re: Airbags went BANG!

I read it on numerous occasions on this forum. I'm not saying it's the gospel truth. Maybe one of our senior car experts (Tom) can pipe in with the low down.

Re: Airbags went BANG!

I remember faintly years ago there was some sort of TSB for dealers to cut off the tow/tie down mounts under the front of the SVX for the possibility of airbag deployment. I will see if I can find this. I will also email a contact to see if the computer can be reset or if replacement is required. Sorry to hear.

Re: Airbags went BANG!

Thank's Chris.

Allstate adjuster Totaled the '96 car for $5300. (More than I expected) I bought it back and plan to fix it. Just a big dent in the Left rear fender and a Left side Mirror, plus the airbags and paint. Anyone have a Black driver's side heated Mirror for sale?

I also have an Ebony/tan '95 with only 120K. It has a solid, chassis and rust-free body (was a Georgia owner) and an Ebony '92 parts car with some body rot, but a very nice GREY interior. I would sell both cars as a package for $4500.
