car starts, dies after a minute, won't start. new fuel pump

our 95 SVX just stopped while driving, started up then stopped, started up again drove about 50 feet then stopped again. would not start. Had it towed to our mechanic, he has been working on it off and on for 3 days, he is stumped by it. He said the fuel pump heats up when you turn the key but does not pump. But the fuel pump (which is 2 months old) pumps when he puts his testers on it. any Ideas?
