new dyno testing for smog in Cali
Looks like California is going to have new smog check standards in place soon in my part of the state. They are going to use a dyno. Here's the info I pulled off of the DMV website:
"Enhanced and Partially Enhanced Area stations use equipment called the BAR-97 Emissions Inspection System (EIS), which uses a treadmill-like device called a dynamometer to simulate actual driving conditions. BAR-97 measures oxides of nitrogen (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO). Large trucks, some four-wheel drive vehicles, and some vehicles with traction control will receive a BAR-97 inspection without the use of the dynamometer." Is the SVX one of the exempt vehicles? I know some other states use a dyno for smog checks and was wondering what the experience has been. I think it wouldn't be too good for the AWD system. Thanks, Matt |

It sounds quite similar to what we have here in Oregon. AWD Subaru vehicles are exempt here.

Brilliant - Cali's Davis trades nursing home care for dyno rollers.
We've had them in MD for many years. Fortunately they're a maintenance nightmare & break with great frequency. Good thing you've got tax money to burn! What a State! Ron (Havin' fun, fun, fun, 'til daddy takes the SVX away).

With the dot-com bust, we are thinking of turning Silicon Valley back into a big orange grove. Maybe we'll plant some artichokes too.
Yeah, the state gov really takes a big chunk of your paycheck. Costs a fortune to drive a car in this state. The new smog check is costing about $70 at most places that have had to install the new equipment. Good news is that I just did a smog on my car two months ago. I have almost 2 years until the next one. Also, they are proposing tripling the annual car registration fee. A $30k car will cost over $600 per year! Since the fee is based on the book value, the SVX will only be a couple of hundred. The high registration cost is one thing that stops me from getting a new car. The other is lack of money. |

(Wow, that just popped into my head). I did some military time in Monterey back in the '60s. Ron (did some funny lookin' cigarettes back then too).

Just Smogged my car for $78 + $102 registration, for the grand total of $180!!! That is extremely expensive.
They did not require me to do the dyno, but the guy could not speak English very good, so he could not explain to me why not. I was ready to pop the fuse in the FWD switch, when he said that it is not necessary. However, even without dyno, he still charged me a lot of money.

By comparison, the price for the emissions test here in MD is twelve bucks every two years. But not to worry....I hear Ahnold is donating the profits from sales of Terminator memorabilia to the public domain. Everybody Californian gets a Toyota Prius! Ron (sniffin' my emissions).
