Tell your boyfriend to rebuild the alternator. Alternator is dying and it may show up as good but trust us. It's not good.

If he takes it out and bring it back and say it's fine, dump him, come over to Chicago, I'll take the alternator and rebuild it and put it back in.

In the process, I can replace him too.

J/K and trying to cheer you up. Alternator can be tested and can come back as ok but when under load and moving in the car, some parts inside may not be touching or may be touching when they should not. Remember, it's a moving motor. Just rebuild it or replace it. If you were any closer, I'd let you swap alternators and see if that helps since my car is still OTR and I am in class.

Put it this way, you have repalced a batt. It has to be the alternator. While the car is running, check the voltage while driving. Get a volt meter and probe it at the cig lighter. When you press gas, it should be around 14.5 and when on idle, it will be around 12.5. Do that while you drive and also right as when all the lights comes on. You will see that your voltage dropped a decent amount.
