Which Auto Transmission Fluid ?

My SVX is due for a transmission fluid change.
Should I stick with the specified dexron II or use a synthetic ?
What Sythetics are being used in the SVX ?

I don't know what's avaliable over in the UK, but everyone seems to like synthetics over here. Aside from Mobil 1, the only transmission fluid I've heard people speak highly of is called Redline.. apparently it's good up to a much higher temperature than most other synthetics..

Royal Purple

I'm using Royal Purple in the engine & tranny, I think the products are tops.

this is pretty late to the debate, but...

Subaru tech bulletin 9002006, Feb 1990, on tranny fluid hints that the lower the number for viscosity (cPs) at -40 degrees the better the fluid (Subaru stating the lower number indicates the quality of the base stock, or an expensive refinement method).

Anyway, a quick search from the companies own web pages found this data:

Royal Purple 7934

Amsoil 7150

Mobil 1 6200

Redline 45

I don't work for any of these companies - can't say how truthful any claims are. Redline's seems suspicious - or I have collected bad data - as Subaru goes on to state the best synthetics approach 5000. Draw your own conclusions. BTW, the Dexron II spec is 50 thousand or lower - according to the same Subaru tech bulletin.
