SmallCar 5 speed install?

Has anyone here had SmallCarPerformance install a 5 speed into their SVX?

The price on their website is $4000 for them to do the conversion in their shop in Tacoma, WA. They supply everything (except the car).

As a side question: How does our AWD work after a 5 speed conversion? Is it still primarily FWD until slippage occurs?

The 5MT is manual (passive). It starts off as 50/50 and of either the front or rear start to spin it locks up the viscous clutch to send power to the other end of the car.

I have heard nothing but horror stories of small car kits and their installs... I would suggest some one more local if you cannot do it yourself

I'm not in a position to do it myself, and you live too far away . . .

Earl to SmallCar -- Put the car keys down and back away from the SVX NOW !!!!!

I will second what Tom said. They do horrible work and DO NOT STAND behind their work or products!!!

I may be interested in doing another 5spd swap. I did one for myself a couple years back with excellent results. I'm in Beaverton, OR. Send me an email at alexyjesi@verizon.net if you're interested. Thanks.

If elninoalex doesn't do the swap for you. Dave Clark Motorsports (425-221-2470) up in Kent, WA can do the install. He did my car. He did an excellent job. Along with the nice tranny crossmember, he installed STi Group N engine and tranny mounts. Pics are in my locker.

Thank you everyone!

I've never seen a thread before where everyone agrees on anything . . . I will definately stay far away from SmallCarPerformance.

Stephen, I'll keep you in mind if I have to do it, hopefully I won't.

The car in question is the 'new' one I just bought, '92 Black, 134K miles. Body and interior are in very good condition for a four owner car, I'm the fifth. The engine feels good and strong. I drove it home (about 225 miles) Thursday through Seattle traffic mixed with a little snow.

The TCU throws an 11 & 24. The 24 makes sense because there is binding occuring in turns. There's also what sounds like heat shield rattle during throttle off, no braking, deceleration from about 45 - 20 mph.

One of the previous owners lowered it, it scrapes on my 1/3 miles gravel driveway. It sits about 3" lower front, 2" lower rear compared to my stock, one previous owner '92 Teal. I haven't had a chance to really look it over yet, it's snowed a lot since I got it home.

Since it's an extra car, I have time to play with it.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

The picture in that link is the exact same picture SmallCar is using for their $2950 kit:

there isn't one - Small Car is the only company to ever sell a kit version, although there are people on this site who are willing and capable of making some of the parts you might need .
