Re: svx sounds diesel

I just fired up my project SVX the other week and thought "it sounds like of like a diesel". Shortly afterwards I got a knock sensor error code, which I'm pretty sure could account for the diesel-ish sound.

I also read that the CEL/error code for knock sensor failure doesn't trigger too easily, so the knock sensor may fail for a while before it fails enough for the ECU to surface an error code.

Cheers,
Ian.

I replaced both knock sensors with new OEM when the manifold was off for the head gasket job. What I did notice was that my fuel trim numbers are very high (positively).

Wink Re: svx sounds diesel

Yall ain't heard nothin yet if I have some time this weekend I'll try and see if I can get the old SVX to fire up and I'll post a video of it. She really sounds like a diesel...even though the rebuilt motor only has about 3K miles or less on it...

Re: svx sounds diesel

The high fuel trims and rough running makes me think vacuum leak or air getting in after the MAF. Do the basic look around and make sure you didn't leave a hose undone. There are quite a few and its a super easy mistake to make.

Re: svx sounds diesel

The fuel trim numbers and idle are back to normal but it still sounds like a diesel.

Re: svx sounds diesel

If the intake cam subgear isn't held in place when the cam is removed and the subgear "unwinds" when you put it back together the engine will sound rattly like a diesel. it won't hurt anything but it does annoy lol. The lash of the gear to gear cams is the likely cause.

I finally convinced the mechanic who did the job to listen to the car and he now agrees with your assumption. He doesn't recall keeping the split gear in tension and just lined the gears back up when he re-installed the cams. The sound doesn't sound like typical intake, exhaust or vacuum leaks to him. Car runs fine and you only hear the diesel sound from outside the car when it is idling. I am ok with just leaving it be so long as there won't be massive issues. I will probably only keep the car another 50K miles or so. So if any additional wear is only an issue over 100k or 200k miles, I will just let is stay as is.

I would love to hear opinions on the wear issues that not tensioning the split gear will cause.
