Chris,

I seriously doubt that happening.
There is just no cache' attached to the name SUBARU.
I think that the SVX will become like a SAAB Sonnet, Fiat 124, or Renault Dauphine. The SVX will provoke curiosity and some interest but not real avid collecting. SVXers will always be on the edge of mainstream auto collecting.

But not quite.

Larry, the SVX has one thing going for it in the collectors sense, low volume sales. Exclusivity always bestows collectability eventually, but it could be a long time.

I would place the SVX in a similar category to the NSU RO80, the original rotary engined car. These were unloved when new [strange coincidence, by unusual breakdown prone transmission ] but have a number of clubs at present, and are cared for. Another car similar in marketing terms would be the Fiat 130 Coupe of the seventies. Lots of people like these.

I can see them being a collectible car with classic status, but we are talking 30+ years in the future.

Joe

Like Larry, I highly doubt that the SVX will ever have much status as a collector's car - and I'm certainly not counting on it.

Yeah, in order to gain a lot in value, a car should be low in production number, but the SVX lacks something else. Nobody but a few of us will feel any nostalgia for the SVX. It's just not a socially significant car.

Don't get me wrong - I love the SVX and intend to keep mine for as long as possible. I love my SVX for what it represents to me - a damned fine product lovingly created. It was obvious to me when we met a few members of its design and manufacturing team - they were so happy that somebody else cared for their creation the way they did. So I keep mine for idealistic reasons, not monetary.

It's too hard to guess the future value of a popular or socially significant car, much less one so unloved (or unnoticed).

We'd all like that to happen, and I suppose it could , but it isn't likely.

Basically, low numbers is all it has going for it on the collector scene.

1. You'd need a heavy (someone of renown) to have owned one and kept it pristine.

2. They are drivers' cars. They were cheap enough (yeah, I know. To whom ?) when new to actually take out and use, and use, and use up. Although there are low-mileage SVX's out there, there probably aren't enough of them to make much of an impact on the collector scene. Consequently -

3. They just didn't have a big enough price tag to attract said heavy's in the first place.

All that being said, things aren't always that predictable.

IT COULD HAPPEN!

OK....., What if Subaru re-introducded the SVX let's say...5-10 years from now and sold Extremely well... Do you think that the 92-97 models would be the cars to own?

I am a pessimistic optimistic. I think the worst is going to happen, that way when it does, i don't feel as bad, but if the best happens, i am twice as happy.

At least the SVX won't turn into a pile of iron oxide as did my Fiat 124 coupe. In my opinion....(are you listening Dean Witter, or was it Merrill Lynch)...the SVX will be at least as collectible as Datsun 240Zs, Fiat Dinos & should always have status as a "special interest" car, as is the '59 Cadillac. Thus, I'm still counting on the beast to cover the expense of a "Big Fat Greek Funeral" for yours truly. A casket with funny windows. Wow, cool.

Ron (buried in thought).

I owned a salvaged 92 celica alltrac and only 271 were produce that year. The st185 had a four-year run (90-93) and only yielded 1746 units. They are by no means consider collectable, only the person selling it on ebay will want you to think it is. God I miss her 200hp 200tq 7200 redline ten speaker sound system with eight-inch drivers in the doors. Its ironic I fell in love with the svx first, but could never afford it when it was new. So I bought the alltrac, then an idiot with a truck took her from me. Finally bought my svx and what a disgrace 35k car when new and seven years later it depreciated 27k no resale value I think I forgot to punctuate.

Sorry but to anyone in for the collecting, as of right now(and forever) we own the car that everyone finds interesting, but never has a want or need to own. I get, "That is such a cool and unique car" as it is all the time but no one cares to own one. I will have this current SVX for the rest of my life, i paid a grand for it, and with the tranny running good i got a lot more then i paid for. Not in car parts, as those are always a down hill struggle, but peice of mind, that im doing it for me, and not for anyone else.
