removing headgasket from block

Hey guys. So after blowing my engine i got another one from pick n pull. i decided to do the head gaskets before i put it in.

So there is gasket material left on the heads and block what is the best way to get them off. i was thinking dremel with non wire abrasive brush?

Gasket Scraper or a razor blade very lightly. Also a scouring sponge (like for doing dishes) can work well.

Re: removing headgasket from block

Kewl it says
220 dry

400 wet

600 wet

And to tilt the block downward for less debrie build up and a shop vac to get anything left.
Going to the store now to get that stuff

Re: removing headgasket from block

I use a Bristle Wheel to do all my Subaru blocks/heads. They make different colored ones (I was always told the yellow one on aluminum blocks/heads, green one for steel)

http://www.fastenal.com/web/products...9,r:3,s:0,i:85

They wont dig into the aluminum and wont leave scratches in the metal, but it will take off the old fiber/graphite gaskets that are a PITA to remove.

Re: removing headgasket from block

ah kewl i will get one next time!

so the heads off the junk yard engine are pitted a bit and should be machined so i took off the heads from my blown engine and they look really good, they cleaned up like perfect! i'm going use them.
