Mine does exactly the same and is a common problem on JDM models. Previous posts suggest it may be the rear diff mounts.

p.s. mine does the same in putting it in reverse - not really a clunk, but a definite pause before it suddenly engages...

Whew!! Thats a relief to know that the others do it. I took my friend out 1/2 hour ago and we were both commenting on it - I did not feel well at all but now much better!!

As long as Mr Transmission is not saying farewell, then I can bear it!! The transmission was rebuilt 18 months ago but I think that I will have to get a cooler asap.

That said, I let my friend drive it (considering he let me drive his BMW 328 coupe!) and he was very impressed...especially with the kickdown on it!! Each of my brothers has given that "laugh" when I nailed the throttle....but of course, I then drive so slowly and carefully the remainder of the time!

On Sunday I will try and detail it (the exterior - the interior is immaculate) and shoot off some photo's so that I can scan them in.

Looks like I will have to drive to Brisbane though!!

Its all tucked away now under its cover for sleepy time...till the weekend!

Thanks for the feedback on the transmission, I was getting very worried!!

Mine is reluctant to go into reverse also James. So much so, that you have to think twice about doing a three point turn on any half-way busy street.

This is about the only time I regret it is not manual. A manual car would be turned and away down the road by the time mine decides going backwards is not so bad after all.

Enjoy the heck out of your car James, and do be careful. I'm not worried about you. Hate to see a good car bent!!

I would expect to see a lot more traffic on the Down Under forum, and a few more meetings arranged. Am I right? Am I right??

Oh, and let Cassie drive it a bit. Only fair that she understands what all the fuss was about. [I cleverly avoided using the word obsession] We will have to think carefully about some judicious form of celebration, this has been a while coming.

Ron is right also. You will find yourself driving most places and most of the time in a genteel[if brisk] fashion, to suit the nature of the car. Then, on a quiet empty road, you can hooligan to your heart's content

It finally had to happen. I wondered how long you could pretend that the Camery was really a SVX.

The first SVX that I saw was a Charcoal one at Coffs Harbour in 97. Looked great, sold me.

Are you going to put the plates off the Toy on it.?

Drive in 3rd, wait for it to engage reverse before you get on the gas.

Mothers 3 stage polish, does wonders.

We all will have to arrange a meet.

I am going to get custom plates for it (sad case that I am!!) but Cassie is getting them for me as a present!! She is so cute...she knew all about the fragile window buttons so refused to open the window!!

Up to what speeds is using '3' acceptable?? For urban driving (ie up to 60kph) would it be ok?

I'll have to look into the Mothers...once I give our RTA (Dept of Roads) their theiving $$$ to transfer the title!!

When are you next in Sydney or down this way??

Congrats, James. I know you will have many pleasant miles ahead of you.

I also had a clunk on going into reverse for a while, but it seems to have gone away. Somehow, that's almost as worrisome as the clunk.

60 kph in 3rd shouldn't present a problem.

Looking forward to the pictures.

Hi Harvey, is this the general concensus? At what point do you put it into Drive (to go to fourth)?

Any downsides? I assume the fuel efficiency will be worse, but the tranny will be better off

James,

You probably know I am driving without top[4] for the last 6 months. Overall mpg worse by approx 2 mpg, but poss 4-6 mpg on a long run. Acceleration is way better of course. I have had mine to 160-180 in third, no strain. For urban driving it is especially OK, and from my experience, the car is not really starting to pull till over 100kph in third.

I think a good rule of thumb would be to remember to slip up into Drive once on to the open road. Drop back down to 3 for stop-start traffic.

will the ECU let you take it into the solid red zone of the tach on a 92 in third gear. Not that I want to do this but there is a failsafe right?

The ECU will shift for you, and you will be going over 100mph at the time. (didn't want to look)
