Engine code 24....

So i just finished an engine pull reseal/and clean on my 92 w 275k.....Took me a couple months as i had no time off. I droped the engine in and double checked all connections and decided to give her a try. She started right up and idled perfectly at 1500 rpm in cold start cycle. After five minutes idle still had'nt gone down. Reved up to 3k couple times and then idle went down to 500 and was sputtering then threw code CEL . Check it CODE 24 SO 2 Q....

1 Is this valve (bypass aircontrol solenoid ) under manifold bolted to aluminum waterpipe that traverses engine(110 subaruparts) OR the idle control valve mounted under THROTTLE BODY....... (216 subaruparts)

2. I have noticed slightly eratic idle over the last year, could have been valve on its way out?

Did a search and got some conflicting info, Im sure you guys will clear this up..... thanx

Its the bypass air control solenoid under the manifold.

Re: Engine code 24....

Thanks Socal, thats what i thought, Im gonna double check connections, and if code still there(ie poor idle ) im gonna try and replace it hopefully w/out pulling manifold. One bolt is easy acces and other will be a pita. Or i might tap the valve couple times see if that works I should have changed this part when i had everything apart... I should be happy the car started since this was my first engine pull!!!!!

Re: Engine code 24....

Yeah ive seen where it is and I wouldnt want to have to R&R it. Do you have a telescoping mechanics mirror? I would get under there with that first and make sure all the hose connections are on and the connector is tight. Pulling that friggin thing out looks like a HEADACHE. If I stoop over the engine bay for more than 15 minutes doing something like that my back starts to hurt like a mf.

Re: Engine code 24....

code 24 is for by pass air valve ,it controls the idle of the car ,its mounted under the throttle housing ,the other one is a aux air valve used for cold start idle ,but does not have a trouble code ,before you jump the gun on it make sure you have no vaccum leaks to the valve ,then remove the throttle housing and using a good carb cleaner clean the valve
part numbers valve22650aa090,gsk22659aa002
if you are careful you can loosen and get the throttle body off with out wreaking the gasket
i hope this helps

Re: Engine code 24....

so bypass air control valve is under ThrottleBdy ???????? and IS what code 24 represents........So there is no code for the auxilery air valve under Intake Mani............SoCal what do you think??? I told you there is confusion on the subject of which valve is what and what they do......

Trophy956 is right. The by pass air valve controls the idle. The Aux air valve only does the fast idle warm up when you start the engine from cold.

Re: Engine code 24....

the by pass valve which is what your car has a code for ,it controls the idle of your car ,the aux air valve controls high idle on cold start
idle is controled my calibrated vaccum leak ,the by pass valve is a motor which rotates a cylinder to let air by pass the throttle to idle the car
since your car sat while resealing it i dont think you thought of blocking off the piping or intake to outside debis ,you dont say wheither the problem is still there

Re: Engine code 24....

The bypass air control solenoid is underneath the intake manifold, just forward of the throttle body. The aux air control doesnt have a code, and its what increases RPMs until the car is at normal operating temp.

Have you downloaded the online service manual yet? It will shed more light on what is what.... the link is below in my signature.
