binding

OK all I got my SVX back and its running with the fuse in the FWD slot and when you take it out the car is binding. so we are driving with the fuse in and it runs great. Now I only have had this car for a few weeks before the trans blew. The dealer put new tires on the front and the rear tires are bald. can the tire situation cause this? He said with the car on the rack and running there is no situation but on the ground this happens so just drive it in front wheel drive mode.

Thoughts?

Re: binding

I would say yes. You need a set of 4 matching tires within 1/4 inch of circumference difference.
Why in the world would they leave bald tires on the back?

Re: binding

From my understanding, the binding is most commonly caused by the Solenoid C on the transmission going bad. That doesn't mean the tranny is shot, just that the solenoid needs to be replaced. Do a search for threads that contain "binding" or a search for "solenoid c" you should find lot of information. After you fix it, get some new tires, -very bad to drive around with mismatched tires.

Re: binding

Sean is correct but if you have mismatched tires on the back and front it would cause this problem. Get four new tires and your problem will most likely go away.
If it does not go away, let me suggest that you put a small bottle of limited slip differential additive in the tranny. This has cured the problem in two of my subarus -- a legacy and my SVX.
If none of these works than the solenoid C fix should cure your problem.
Some here disagree with putting the limited slip differential additive in the tranny but it worked instantly for me....
BUT I do think it's your mismatched tires that are causing this problem....

Re: binding

Any dealer or repair shop who tells you to drive the car in a mode meant for diagnosis and testing only because they didn't fix the car properly isn't worth a wooden nickel. Take it back and tell them to repair it correctly, or at least diagnose it correctly.

As for not doing it on the rack, there is no way the car could bind on a rack, binding is caused by a difference in speed or lack of difference in speed between wheels, which requires resistance. The C solenoid is very temperamental and fails often. Any shop familiar with a subaru transmission would replace it during any rebuild. A shop not familiar with this transmission would likely not even know it was there and if they did they would not know its function.

If the friction discs are new in the transfer clutch, they may need to be broken in. This would take a week or two of normal driving.

Tell the shop they need to test the transfer clutch apply pressure at the transfer test port as outlined in the service manual or in the transmission manual that is available to transmission specialists.

DO NOT continue to drive the vehicle in FWD mode as it is not designed to operate in this mode except during emissions testing or in rare cases for a limited amount of time.

Re: binding

I need to save up some cash to get some new tires on it then I am taking it back for them to do there testing. If it still binds then they are going to have to fix it. Now where to get a good deal on some tires?????

Re: binding

Thats a pretty good price. You could do a little ebay searching, but thats probably the best bet. I usually go with tirerack. I also had some binding issues. The tires can def cause that. However i went with a 4.44 because my tranny was basically toast by time i got the car. Best of luck

Re: binding

Well after some Pawn shop hopping around I now have the money for the tires. So going to get them on tomorrow and get them on and that fuse out. Going to have the trans shop pull the fuse and test and be done with this ordeal
