Ultralight camping-what do you need?
So I'm single again and have a little freedom on the weekends. I'm looking at getting back into hiking and camping but want to keep the weight down. I want to get experience in survival techniques and primitive technology some of which I found a great deal on the internet. Parents have 50 acres to "practice" on with varying terrain but have the Smokey Mountains and Bridgestone Wildlife Area within reasonable distance. What gear or advice do ou recommend? Thanks

Re: Ultralight camping-what do you need?
I always go into the woods with two knives.
One big enough to chop down a tree. The old fashioned way, not like Young Tom Another that you can actually use for the non life threatening stuff. Rope. A way to start fire. A flashlight that can be used as a Kubaton. A cell phone.

Re: Ultralight camping-what do you need?
No need for that if you want to experience the "survival techniques and primitive technology"...

Re: Ultralight camping-what do you need?
Liquer. Serves dual purpose. If you get a cut of sorts, it can be used to sterlize the wound. It is also an excelent sleep aid.

Years ago my brother-in-law and I were doing a day hike on a portion of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail, series of trails that runs along the ridges of the west coast mountain ranges from Canada to Mexico). At the top of one of the ridges we came upon a guy hiking the other way by himself. Picture the most scraggly hermit you can imagine - long beard, dirty tattered cloths, filthy and smelly. He claimed that he had left southern California "around a year ago" and had just stuck to the trail to see how far north he could go. Basically just a "mountain man" living off the land and taking up the challenge. His story seemed pretty plausible based on his appearance and the fact he acted very strange. He was either doing the epic hike with no gear, or he was making up a story and actually just lived up there somewhere in the woods. The only thing he had with him was an umbrella! Strange.

An umbrella? Perhaps he knows something we don't about survival? That's right.. The one and only true survival tool you need is.... An umbrella!!
