Moving to Reading PA

I got a job offer in Reading, PA. So I might need to relocate. I'm not familiar with the area. I know many of you meet there. Can anyone recommend some nice neighborhoods to move to? I'm willing to travel up to 40 miles. Thanks.

Re: Moving to Reading PA

There aren't any nice neighborhoods its READING! Seriously, depending on where the job is I'd try to stay out of the city (unless you'll be working downtown). Parking in Reading pretty much blows. There are some decent areas but very little off street parking that I've noticed.

Congrats on the job!

Re: Moving to Reading PA

The City of Reading is not very nice. Also the murder rate is pretty high for a small town, however all around Reading the suburban townships are nice. Wyomissing, Exeter, Douglasville any many other towns are pretty nice. The Reading area is within an hour of Philadelphia, Allentown and Lancaster so it can be a pretty good place to live.

Just make sure you're careful if you're near Morgantown in April. A bunch of lunatics drive through once a year or so in wierd old cars with strange windows.

Re: Moving to Reading PA

Another option is to look for homes near Pottsville and Southern Schuylkill County, real estate is still dirt cheap and you can get to the northern side of Reading in 30 minutes.

I grew up in Morgantown, just south of Reading, and now live up here so I'm familiar with both sides. Give some more details and I can make some better recommendations. Family? Kids? What do you want to do when you're not working?

If you need temporary housing in Morgantown (week to week room rental) I may be able to help you out.

Re: Moving to Reading PA

I need to wait for someone to retire, maybe 1-6 months. The job is across from Albright College. I'm married and have 4 small boys. My wife loves Malls (don't they all?) and would like to be close to her friends in Allentown and New york. My main concern is schools for the kids. I don't mind driving, so I would cosider any place in between. I like Spring township and my wife likes Bethlehem. Any info on these areas? Thanks again.

I lived in Bethlehem township for a few years and both my younger brothers went through all the grades of that school system. The schools are excellent both my brothers went on to great colleges. If you are looking at Bethlehem you want the part where your kids will go to Freedom High School rather than Liberty High School. But, Bethlehem is going to be like an hour away from Albright College area. I also know that there is a really slow intersection on 222 that always backs up in rush hour and adds like 15 unnecessary minutes to that drive. I am not familiar with Spring Township.

Re: Moving to Reading PA

I've narrowed it down to; Hanover township, Bethlehem PA located in Northampton County. Any additional information would be helpful. Thanks to all for their comments!

Re: Moving to Reading PA

The road system around Reading was designed by Lucifer himself. Before you settle on a place do yourself a favor and go drive the commute during the times you'll be going to and from work.

Let me tell ya...this man does have a very valid point. There are roads that have ramps that really are what i would consider the main direction for that road (yet they built another road )....so yeah do what he says

I already tried the route. Believe me, it's nothing compared to my commute to NYC for 5 years!

Re: Moving to Reading PA

My dad grew up in Reading, graduated from Reading High in 1970.. Lived on Pear St (or "Pear Alley" as it's known), and his aunt and uncle up until like 2 years ago lived in the house that her and my dad's mom were both born in... I haven't been there since 2001 when my cousin got married... my dad's brother and his 3 kids (and their kids..) all live pretty close to Reading. (My dad's uncle who passed away a couple of months ago used to joke that they were going to change the name from Reading, PA to Reading, PR cuz of all the Puerto Ricans that live there now...)
