Handles worse than WHAT?? I know a guy with a LT-1 Corvette and an Outback wagon. HE said that the Outback handles " ABOUT the SAME", but the 'vette' has more power.

96 lsi takes the 2.5l engine most notorious year for HG's i believe.

Re: Considering a 1997 Legacy 2.5GT
The 96 had the weak 150hp engines and still took premium fuel.

If it is a 2.2 the biggest issue I've noticed is of course the auto tranny (make sure the tires match, fluid smells good but not new etc.) and rust in the rear panel above the wheelwell.

It turns out the 96 is Jay's. Small world. It has the 2.5 and has had it redone. If it survives the appointments, I can see her next week.

Re: Considering a 1997 Legacy 2.5GT
I've canceled all the appointments minus one, where the girl interested already rented a car to come look at it. If i canceled on her she'd be out the money for the rental with nothing to show, and i'd feel bad about that. If she doesn't buy it, though, it's all yours if you like what you see when you check it out. I can't believe how much interest I recieved on it though, considering i listed it for sale a few months ago and recieved one email, and the person checked it out and offered me $1000 for it. Needless to say I still have it.

Re: Considering a 1997 Legacy 2.5GT
Yeah, i'll be brutally honest. However she is a college student without a lot of money and no clue with cars, so she needs something that is reliable and won't leave her stranded, yet she can't afford to keep repairing a vehicle, and the wagon is near indestructable. However, if she doesn't have cash in hand tomorrow, she's SOL.
Also, here's a great reason to always be 100% up front about cars when you go to sell, you never know if you know the person on hte other end! Plus it's just polite

Re: Considering a 1997 Legacy 2.5GT
So I am driving/buying my stepmother's '97 Legacy 2.5 GT wagon (since my '99 Civic SI gotten stolen and stripped). We had the head gaskets done less han a year ago (at around 155,000 miles). I am wondering what what would be the best engine swap for her? I would like to go kinda cheap but at least have another daily driver that isn't an absolute bore. Funny thing is that once I started driving her, she started to perk up... my stepmom must have driven her like a granny.
The body has a bit of damage (stepsister doesn't know how to pull out of the garage without running into the doorway --> smacks forehead). The engine does have that "piston slap" that my stepmom said it had since new... but is still running strong at over 160,000 miles. The radiator, head gaskets, and suspension are all brand new. I'm wondering if it is worth it to do a WRX or/STi engine swap and what the cost would be... tranny swap needed or not (guessing nescesary).

Re: Considering a 1997 Legacy 2.5GT
The 2.5's have pep, especially if they're automatic. With a 4.44, you've got the lowest gear ratio. Why would you want to swap it? It'd be a hell of a lot easier, and not that much more expensive, to just buy a wrx.
