Kelli, keep us posted, my fasted run so far is 15.789 @ 90 something. I would like to see what you run, have fun, (legal) drag racing is so fun. When i went racing, i put the shifter in '1' and brake started at about 2000 RPM (i know it's bad, but ive only raced twice). Once again, keep us (me) posted.

for any of you who seriously raced your car for the 1/4 mile for times...which gear should i stick to? i want the fastest time possible. there is a 6 cyl Pontiac that thinks he can rip my doors off....YEAH RIGHT!!! but i would looooove to totally embarrass him! the only person in my car club that might give me problems is a WORKED Camaro Z28. never met a lead foot like that girl

When i raced, i had the shifter in '1'. The RPMs go up pretty high in that, and it WILL shift for you. Mine shifted into third right before i finished. Next time I go (if i do) I'll try out some different techniques, although that wont help you by Friday.

so i can just leave it in 1st gear and i will not have to shift it at all?? i don't want to hurt my car...if it will cause any damage, i will not do it

That is correct. I raced a single autocross event last year completely in first gear. At one point on the track there was a small straight. As soon as the engine reached ~6500RPM it forced the shift to second gear.

As for drag racing, I really don't think it should make any difference which gear you select. Perhaps try some practice runs with the shifter in different positions. If there is more than a 0.2 second difference then you have proved me wrong. Anything less and it's probably not worth it.

As for damage it shouldn't change. You still start from a stop and shift at ~6500RPM.

If anyone else here knows otherwise please correct me as these are my opinions/observations.

Correct, it will shift automatically to save the engine.
Drag racing in general is probably hurting your car, so your last statement doesnt make sense . Sorry, had a bad day at work, not in the best mood.
