I definitely want in on your secrets! Send me a PM sometime.

Smoked would look really nice, especially on the black cars. In fact, see the picture of the prototype several posts up - the original SVX concept cars did indeed have smoked tail lights as well as all the lights in the front (including the fake center one) being smoked. Of course that probably couldn't make it to production legally. Kinda off topic, but don't Audi TT's have slightly smoked headlights?

As cool as it looks, I probably wouldn't smoke any of the lights (exception, 3rd LED brake light) unless there were a ton of bright LEDs in there. I don't want someone running into me!

A random observation I made on my way home yesterday:

A newer BMW 3 series signalled and pulled in front of me - the rear turn signal was red, and the light output of the signal was red too. No amber.

I'm sure there are several others, that was just the first one I specficially noticed since I've been thinking of this.

I had been thinking about getting a whole set of brakelights and removing the diffuser and smoking them at the same time. Wish I had the extra money

I hate those blackout tail light covers, they look pretty cool like, at a show or something, but I hate being behind some kid in a Honduh with smoked covers on his tail lights, couple that with his cheap fast-blink LED lights and I can't see snot... The smoked ones that are SLIGHTLY tinted but still clear enough to see the lights in the daylight are pretty cool though.

That's mine ...can't you tell by the plates on it

A girl I work with has a charger and her b/f smoked them out by taking them apart and spraying them from the inside. Makes sense to me as it won't scratch, and I think it looks so much better than the people who do them from the outside.

One down, one to go

Turned out okayish with the red film. Im sure it'll come oput better next time. Seems I have some dust under the film, and I made alot of light scratches in the film while trying to shape it.(Im sure a coat of wax may help) All in all, lookes pretty good from 4 feet away
What makes it suck: the red is a little too dark...has a bit of texture, and looks hazey at extream side angles. I'll likely be trying to spray them red from the inside out. for now though, this gives me an idea of what it'll look like

I've been waiting for pics.
Looks pretty good. I love the idea of an all red taillight band to offset the all clear headlight band.

Eric,

Where did you get your film? I ordered from DecalFX almost 3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything. Their email is unavailable and they have no phone number.

If you heat the film with a heat gun, it stretches very easily to conform to compound shapes. This also makes it somewhat thinner, less hazy at different angles and less dark.

Got mine from the same place. It took a few days for my payment to clear, but they ended up shipping out on labor day, arrived at my doorstep today.

Yeah, the heat gun would help. I had a ghetto way of heating and stretching that worked, but I dont think it was hot enough. at least I have a good idea of how to go about getting it perfected on the other side..and I can re-do this one. The good news is, no more condensation

I also prefer the amber signals. Simply from a road safety standpoint I like having the distinction between brake and turn lights.

I think my favorite thing would be to clear all of the tail lights and use bulbs that emit the appropriate colour light. A solid silver bar across the back of the car would look pretty neat.
