eep!! problems, over rev!
Just doing my usual 3hr drive to melbourne like i do every fortnight... done me checks before leaving home... 2hrs into the trip, when im accelerating, the revs jsut go off the top, and i had a bit of smoke in the engine bay...
not too happy about this, had roadside assist come, this 'drugged' up fag jsut said tow it, so its been towed to a mechanic... sigh, my bulletproof car isn't so bulletproof... jsut hoping its a cheap fix, i never have much spare cash im a little worried about the oil under the car.. its covered the underside the engine a fair bit... and im guessing the smoke. might have been coming off the exhaust maybe? I'm not the most mechanically minded here anyways, any ideas what the probs could be..? will post a followup in a couple days rob. |

P.S. Presuming you have an Aust, or JDM car with a centre LSD, there is a problem with towing. Subaru say that it is acceptable to tow the car on all four wheels, in neutral with the ignition switched to accessories, but at no more than 30 Km/Hr and for no more than 10 Km. The important point is that the car must not be towed with one set of wheels raised from the ground, as this will/can damage the centre LSD mult-plate clutch. Over here tow truck drivers are instructed when towing a Subaru, to insert the transmission fuse which frees the front rear drive connection. In the special case our model SVX, this has caused nasty problems.

Smoke on the waters, Dire Straits.
Rob, yes second Budfreak, lot of smoke. It may have been leaking for a bit, and dropped line pressure to do the slip. Don't think it will have hurt anything.
Just your Pride mate. Harvey.

transmission is rooted
It was towed on the back of a flat truck, not pulled behind, no worries there the mechanic says im up for about $1000AU whats the best plan here... worth waiting a little while, and source a new/used tranny?, can they be rebuilt? the smoke that i saw, was oil on the exhaust i think... the mechanic is cleaning the underside monday, then will know the real $$ damage... always happens to me, rego is due in 2 weeks, and this happens, god damn it.. will post tomorrow night with followup cheers, rob |

The fact that your mechanic is cleaning things up before making a final diagnosis is a positive sign that he is genuine. Listen carefully and ensure that expenses suggested make sense. In that respect if the transmission has to be removed, a full overhaul may be justified as most cost effective. Fingers crossed for you. Trevor.

Full Story
i got my car back today
drove it to and from work using the manual shift, i can go from 1st to 2nd,, not third, wont find it. and thats it using normal 'drive', it sits in 1st. and gets to 2nd, thats it, but very unreliable in 2nd.. when i stopped, the car smelt bad, like oil bad... last week when it died, my nose was blocked by a bad cold, and could smell nothing, this smelled a fair bit anyways. im going to clean up the engine bay, work out how to get this 1/2 cut from brisbane down to vic, and then organise a mechanic to swap them over. not sure what to do with the current transmission, whether its worth fixing & selling, or what? i jsut dunno sigh, its good to have the car back though.. |

Clean things up and find where oil is coming from. Meantime come to no final conclusions and best of luck.
