2nd and 4th out on 4EAT

I've got a 4EAT SVX sitting at my house (not mine) that has 2nd and 4th gear out of it, reverse, 1st and 3rd seem OK.

Before I do anything to it, could this be from a bad solenoid? Or valve body?

Or is it for sure burnt clutches? (I thought 3rd and 4th were on the same clutches)

Thanks for any advise you may have.

No I haven't Tom,
Would it affect 2nd, and 4th? ...I thought 3rd and 4th were on the same drum..which is why this one seemed strange to me...

Sounds like the brake band to me as well.

3rd and 4th both use the high clutch so it's not that.

So you don't think it could be a bad solinoid?

Yeah, I see the brake band answer thrown around here loosely... a LOT... I dont like it. Especially seeing as that wasnt the case with me, and Brake band was what was suggested.

Gid'ay Huck, if it was a solenoid, it would turn both shift solenoids off and default to 3rd gear. You can be sure it is the band that is not working. It is used in 2nd and 4th.

Maybe some body has tried to adjust the band, backed the adjustment off too much, and dropped the link into the box.

Harvey.

Thanks Harvey,
So it's most likely the brake band.
I'm pretty sure it hasn't been touched on this car, as nothing else has been...Tranny fluid black as coal...really burnt...so I may try to tighten the band, but figure it's totally burnt up...but maybe a brake band adjustment and a fluid change might wring a few more miles out of it...

Thanks for the answers guys,

You'll probably want to run some cheap ATF through the tranny after removing the molasses that was in there. Run with the cheap ATF for a bit then change it with your normal ATF. That should ensure you've replaced around 90% of the original fluid.

Well there may be another option just as simple. Get a new tranny and then see if there was something wrong with the old one. My Impreza had a problem like that. I found it cheap and under less hassle to get a new one find a tranny shop and have them put it in. I got a tranny for 600 and had it put in for 400. I do still need to go pik up the old tranny though ( had that done just be for Thanksgiving... it's bee sitting at the shop since). You might find a good 4.11 or 4.44 tranny for cheap and have it thrown it. It can save a lot of money on just form the less time it spends not on the road. by the by anyone know the ratios on the 97 Imprezas? I might have lucked out and got a 4.11 or very unlikely but would be cool 4.44 now jsut sitting around to put in my SVX. ...

Most auto Imprezas are 4.11's....only Impreza to get the 4.44's was the RS.
