Need help with belts ASAP!
As those at the banquet no, I can't drive my SVX these days because of worn powersteering belt to the point it is shredded. At this point not sure I would even be able to take it across town to be fixed, and I'm fine doing it myself anyway.
However, if anyone has done this and can give a quick how-to it would be appreciated. Power steering AND alternator belt, might as well do both at the same time. Is there anything I need to buy besides the two belts? I want to order parts ASAP, like today if possible, because I'm sure they aren't just in stock and I figure the dealer would need a day or two so I can pick them up Saturday. I really want to get the SVX back in running shape and I have a big window of time this coming week so PLEASE help! Thanks!

The belts are easy to replace. The only thing to remember is to loosen the nut on the tensioner pulley for the alternator before trying to loosen the pulley itself.

I recently had a shredded Alt/PS belt. Mine was due to a bad crankshaft pulley. The rubber was completely seperated, the outer ring came off as soon as I removed what was left of the belt. The AC belt was free floating between the crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover. The Alt/PS belt was on the AC grooves of the crankshaft pulley.
Obviously if your crankshaft pulley is bad it's not as bad as mine was because I think you would have said something about it. Once you get the belts off check your crankshaft pulley. Grab ahold of the outer ring, (make sure the engine is cool . . . ouch!), there should be absolutely no movement unless you're applying enough pressure to turn the engine. If you have to replace the crankshaft pulley, the hardest part of the job is finding a replacement. You can use a crankshaft pulley from other models of Subarus. The actual work involved is minimal. Use the search feature to find more information. Good Luck, Dan |
