SVX Lifespan?

What is the average lifespan of an SVX, mainly the motor? I know the transmissions tend to go out, my dad's did at like 40k miles. But his legacy is still running strong at 230,000 miles. What would you wager on a 92 with 150,000 miles? I'm just curious how long a car like that would last with leaky valves, and how much are those to fix? Like I said, I just want the knowledge im not buying this car...check it out anyway http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...5637771#vdptop

Life on some are over 300 K with original tranny. I think it is how you drive them, where you live, how often you service the car, and maybe some luck involved. The engine is probably the most bullet proof part of the car.

Lots of variables to consider

Maintenance being tantamount. Driving style, local climate, etc all figure in. Couple of people here well over 200K on their motors.

Repair costs will very based on the type of work required, who and where it's done (independent vs Subaru dealer and location figure in to hourly rate)

Too much to give a rule of thumb. Bets bet on any used car is a thorough inspection by a qualified technician prior to purchase. Can be expensive, but can also save you a lot of headaches.

Agreed! This seems to be a major strong point with Subaru.

It can with some love.

Now is the time in this car's age when decisions are made on dollars, not love. For me, replacing an engine in an SVX worth $1500 is not even a question. replacing suspension parts, brake and fuel lines (not that I've needed to yet) are a no brainier.

A lot of people would look at a 13 year old car and say "time to get a new car" but not me. I'll have my SVXes until they stop making gas.

I'll be that old guy with the CNC shop in his basement that the neighbor's talk about. "What's the old guy up to now?" "Ah, he's just making a part for some car with weird windows from 50 years ago..."

I'll add my two cents:

Wash your car often, even in the winter. We get tons of sand and salt dumped here in the Northeast every winter. When we put a car on a lift at our garage we can tell the cars that get washed often from the ones that only get washed "when the weather is nice". The undercarriage of the cars that get washed year round look really good. On the other hand, some cars that go all winter without ever having a good under body wash will show signs of rust after just three years.

If you want your car to last forever it's important not to ignore the metal that holds it all together!!

Pay for the good wash

Most auto car washes offer undercarriage was/flush on the more expensive wash packages. I get it done every time my cars are washed.
