Great Replacement Key Option
I found a great replacement key blank option for the SVX. It has a molded black plastic grip, it's more substantial & feels stronger than the original key and it's inexpensive as well.
I wanted to replace my original 12 year old key but the one that my Subaru dealer cut for me from my VIN was the cheapo one that's all metal and feels sharp enough to remove skin from your fingers. Since my dealer didn't charge me for the cheap blank or the cut, I kept my eyes open for better replacement and there it was, at Home Depot, for $1.49. Not only do we share brake pads with a Nissan product (Pathfinder), but the SVX also shares the Nissan key blank! Go to Home Depot and look for the Axxess+ Key Number 37R. Attached is a pic of the blank already cut. Since it was copied off of a brand new key cut at the Suby dealer from my VIN #, I was pretty confident that it would work and it does. If the SVX key you are copying is old and you're not syre you want to use it as a master, just buy the uncut blank and ask your Subaru dealer to cut it for your from your VIN#, thereby ensuring a good key. Tomato
You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to.
You say bulky, I say substantial. I guess it all depends on what you want from a key. I like one that I can grip and turn while wearing winter gloves. I have big hands and my stock SVX key is easily the smallest key (head) that I have ever owned, so this is a nice improvement IMHO. |

I cant stand those alien head nissan keys, we had one for our 90 sentra and my sis has a set for her 95 sentra. This is is another part FHI grabbed from the Nissan parts bin. I do believe most if not all Subarus use the Nissan Key/Lock setup.

wrx (newer Suby) keys are different from the older ones
When I had my 2002 WRX, its key and the SVX key look the same when looking at them from above (they have the same width grooves in the same locations) but when you look at them from the tips, the WRX key blank is THICKER. Whether or not the newer, thicker Subaru keys mirror Nissans current keys I cannot say.

actually I think most major retailer that copy keys use axxess. I got mine at walmart... however, I had to listen to about 30 minutes of diatribe from a locksmith about how crappy they are, maybe he was just bitter because he was losing business to walmart, or maybe the key bites...
I would say after nearly 2 years of continued daily use, it still seems to be working fine.... Skip

Subaru doesn't use the same key blank as nissan. It is just the closest that is stocked by the Home Crapo and the like. 99% of the time they can make it work but if you wanna get a right key made you'll need to go to the dealer (usually crap as well since they aren't in the key making business or a locksmith.

Speaking of keys,
Anyone have one of these's key's? They are/were on e-bay, a little on the pricey side, but look kinda cool.
