Transmission and Front DIff vent hose
I recently had my transmission out to replace some gaskets and I noticed that there are 2 vent outlets on the top of the transmission/front diff assembly. When I got the car, there was a piece of curved hose that appeared that it was connected between the two, but had come disconnected. Are they supposed to be connected? is it to balance out the internal pressures? Just want to make sure its hooked up right when I"m done.
Thanks |

They should not be connected. They are just that...vents.

Subaruparts.com is my only source for parts diagrams and they don' t show where the hoses go or if there is a vent to put on the ends. They just say to refer to fig. 154-A, fig 165-A and 156-A. Does anyone know what this is refering to?

There is a separate hose for each. They are there to prevent excess internal pressure from building up.

But what goes on the ends of them as a vent to keep dirt out?

Nothing - they just curve downwards. You can see both of them in this photo of my old tranny:

Yeah mine was missing those fancy curved hoses when I got it. I think the tranny had been removed and serviced before I got the car. They make small vents that stick into the end of vacuum hose like whats on there, so I"ll pick up a pair at the parts store and do it that way.
Thanks for the info Dan |

My overflow hoses were coughing up ATF onto the exhaust when the front dif seals went bad (less than 10k after getting the tranny rebuilt).
