Heat shield removal

Ok guys i have some free time tomorrow so i want to get rid of those crappy rattlin noises underneath the car. Ive decided to finally remove the heat shields. I dont have a jack or anything so im going to have to get under the car and do it the hard way. I only know of 2 shields over the cats and i was advised not to take them off because the cats can get pretty hot. So where are the other shields and im assuming their all bolted on so i can remove them with some wrenches or sockets. So all i need to know is which ones to remove...maybe picture or somethin would help. Thanks in advance,

Tom,

Honestly, before going under your car and removing heat shields, I'd take a garden hose and try to power wash the underside of your car to remove as much rocks and debris that's caught in the heat shields... You'll be surprised at how much you'll find.

If the rattling persists then you might want to look into removing your resonator (if you haven't done so already - can't remember).

Another possibilty is seeing whether any heat shields that 'clad' the exhaust system from the headers back to the y-pipe are lose.

My $0.02...

yea first im going to knock around the piped and see if anything is loose or if i hear any rattling. Ill try the thing with the hose too. When we removed my intake resonator and took the underlining off there was like 4 buckets worth of dirt that came out lol.

You must be one skinny dude to fit under there without a jack!!! You might want to consider driving one side up on the curb. Best thing one can do is put out minor $$ for a set of ramps. They can save you major frustration for oil changes and the like.

Yea i have a set of ramps but their too high and the svx bumper keeps hitting it and moving it out of the way so im going to buy some lower ramps next week but untill then i have to resort to this.

I normally just use the car jack to raise the car a few inches on one side. It gives me enough space to work underneath...

Chike, AFTER placing a jackstand under it I assume?

soobiesvx93, My ramps (steel) did that as well until I found some bolt-on approach ramps that fold out to about 24" in front of the ramp, immobilyzing the ramps (mine used to "squirm" as I tried to pull on) and easing the angle to transition onto the steeper climb of the ramps. These are invaluable!!! I'll get a pic tonight and place in my locker if anyone's interested.

I guess I live on the wild side!

I just place blocks behind the opposing wheels, shake it a little to make sure it on the jack squarely and crawl under.

I'll probably invest in some stands shortly due to the added safety of them...

It's not worth the risk. I've seen jacks collapse. If your life isn't worth $20 for a couple of stands, at least put some blocks of wood or concrete underneath to help support it when the inevitable happens.

Post the pics! And yea they sell ramp extensions at the store i just have to buy em. I'm also going to invest in a hydraulic jack and some stands....me and my friend are going to go half way on both.

Great way to go! My 2 ton Sears floor jack must be 20+ yrs old and still going strong. They regularly give a set of jackstands away with jack purchase too! Dirt cheap if you have to buy 'em as well. I have 2 sets, but thinking about picking up one of the new low profile jacks, passing the old one on to one of my boys, cuz the old one barely fits under the nose of the SVX.

I'll get some pics of the ramps up tonight. The darn things used to make a heck of a racket sliding across the garage floor if I approached too slowly, or if the tires were wet coming in from outside. Had to then get out and reposition em, or get some foolhardy soul to stick a foot against them while I pulled on. Thought about gluing some carpet onto em until I got the extensions. Still might, or may sprinkle some coarse sand on them after spraying with adhesive.
